Minimum Requirements:

Master's degree in business or public administration (MBA or MPA) or equivalent combination of education and work experience may be substituted for the requirements noted. At least eight(8)years of progressive experience in business and financial operations management within a university, private non-profit, or private company setting.

Position Description:

The Executive Director will strategically lead financial and business operations within the Office of Research & Innovation and will collaborate with office leadership to enhance operational efficiency through the implementation of best practices. As a member of the Research & Innovation leadership team, and in collaboration with key research stakeholders, the Executive Director will review, create, redesign, and implement effective business processes and procedures that drive operational excellence, including stakeholder engagement, program development, process improvement, and change management initiatives. The Executive Director will collaboratively establish strategic business initiatives and sustainable business models and serve as a champion for continuous improvement initiatives across the Office of Research and Innovation.

The Executive Director will:
  • Strategically engaged as the lead financial and business manager for the Office of Research & Innovation. Lead and oversee budgeting, financial management, grants management, reporting, and forecasting ensuring effective resource allocation and administration. Collaborate with Research & Innovation leadership to achieve successful business and financial oversight and engage with university partners to drive efficient and positive outcomes with attention to advancing Research & Innovation goals and objectives. Develop, maintain, and communicate effective business processes with a strong customer service orientation and attention to continuous improvement. Develop innovative approaches to business and financial management practices at the operational and strategic levels, including leveraging technology and systems to drive efficient use of resources.
  • Oversee staff and coordinate the effective administration of sponsored programs (grants and contracts) awarded to investigators and Program Directors in the Office of Research & Innovation.
  • Develop, implement, and oversee a cohesive approach to research stakeholder engagement and continuous improvement for the UofL research community. In collaboration with office leadership, engage internal stakeholders via a variety of mechanisms to understand and gather information on customer experience, challenges, needs, and opportunities. Assimilate and analyze customer feedback and develop actionable plans to enhance operations and expand tools and resources in areas of identified need. Oversee staff and implement strategies that address gaps in service and/or resources, including development of centralized research support programming.
  • Lead and drive process improvement and process design/redesign initiatives across the Office of Research & Innovation. Review existing operational processes, procedures, and policies and establish an understanding of current state, including the identification of problematic pain-points, bottlenecks, and inefficiencies. In collaboration with office leadership, establish vision and roadmap for future state operations and guide the implementation of plans for establishing future state, including the implementation of new systems/technologies. Assist with the development of documentation to solidify new processes and procedures and to facilitate stakeholder navigation.
  • Lead and support initiatives aligned with the Office of Research & Innovation vision and drive for operational excellence. Develop and inject performance transformation, quality assurance, business intelligence, and change management strategies into existing and new office initiatives. Assist with the development, collection, and review of meaningful key performance indicators/metrics and the development of action plans to drive organizational improvement. Identify value added technology solutions that will enhance productivity and minimize administrative burden.

Compensation will be commensurate to candidate experience.
