The Connecticut State Department of Education's (CSDE) Division of School Health, Child Nutrition and Family Services is now accepting applications for an exciting Associate Education Consultant opportunity to utilize their background in student mental and behavioral health with a specific focus on school safety and crisis prevention and response.

THE ROLE: Under the direction of the Unit Education Manager, this individual will work collaboratively with colleagues in the Division and with other CSDE offices and divisions primarily focused on the tasks below:
  • Provide support to school districts around improving mental health service delivery and coordination.
  • Monitor and expand guidance and supports for schools in delivering trauma-informed educational services, social emotional supports and aligning school and community resources to meet student needs.
  • Identify and promote initiatives available to schools through collaboration with other service providing state agencies’ priority activities including the Departments of Children and Families, Mental Health and Addiction Services, Emergency Services and Public Protection; and others.
  • Support and serve as a resource to school mental health professionals including school social workers.
  • Support development and ensure preparedness in school districts regarding school safety and security and crisis response knowledge and practices.
  • Serve as the CSDE lead for crisis response in school districts following school violence.
  • Coordinate with other state agencies and partners regarding training, prevention and intervention strategies targeting children’s and youth mental health, school safety, violence prevention and suicide prevention.
  • Manage grant programs seeking to support student social, emotional, mental and behavioral health school and safety.
  • Serve as the Department representative and content area expert on: CT Suicide Advisory Board and Postvention Committee; Children’s Behavioral Health Plan Implementation Advisory Group; Alcohol and Drug Policy Council Prevention, Screening and Early Intervention Subcommittee (ADPC-PSEI); Child Behavioral Health Advisory Committee (CBHAC); State Advisory Council for the Mental Health Block Grant; and other committees as assigned.

PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)

In the Departments of Aging and Disability Services, Education, and the Connecticut Technical Education and Career System assists in planning and executing programs of extensive difficulty and scope for the improvement of education in the State.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

Assists a Bureau Chief or Education Consultant in supervising various educational programs and services offered by the State; assists in the development and administration of certain programs of major importance or may develop and administer other programs within the framework of bureau policy; provides professional leadership and guidance to school authorities, professional organizations, students and various community groups and individuals; may assist in directing the routine functioning of the bureau; performs related duties as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY

Considerable knowledge of the philosophy and methods of education with particular reference to the field concerned; teaching skill; ability to prepare reports; ability to deal effectively with others.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE

An earned advanced degree and five (5) years of professional experience OR in lieu thereof an equivalent combination of experience and training approved by the Board of Education.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Certification from the Connecticut State Department of Education as a School Social Worker.
  • Experience working in a school system administering social, emotional, or behavioral assessments.
  • Experience implementing social-emotional learning.
  • Experience with school safety, including creating and implementing Connecticut's All-Hazards Security and Safety Plans.
  • Experience developing and managing the implementation and evaluation of grant programs.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Incumbents in this class in certain positions may be required to possess an appropriate certificate issued by State Board of Education.
