Full Description

The New York City Department of Transportation has over 80 properties citywide. This position will be responsible for overseeing the workload of the HVAC team assigned to the Facilities Maintenance Unit.

The Assistant Mechanical Engineer will be responsible for the following:
1. Conduct a thorough assessment of all HVAC systems to identify potential issues or deficiencies.
2. Based on the findings from the evaluation, generate work orders for necessary repairs, replacements, and upgrades of the HVAC systems. Ensure that these work orders are prioritized based on urgency and criticality.
3. Develop a preventative maintenance schedule: Design a comprehensive maintenance schedule for all mechanical assets, including HVAC systems, in all properties. This schedule should include routine inspections, filter replacements, cleaning, lubrication, and other necessary maintenance tasks to prevent breakdowns and ensure peak performance.
4. Manage the HVAC team: Provide leadership and direction to the HVAC team, assign tasks, monitor progress, and ensure that work is completed on time and to the required standards. Encourage teamwork, foster a positive work environment, and motivate team members to achieve their full potential.
5. Ensure that all HVAC systems in the properties meet the necessary codes, standards, and regulations. Keep up-to-date with any changes or updates to regulations and adjust maintenance schedules accordingly.
6. Identify opportunities to reduce energy consumption and costs by implementing energy-saving initiatives. This may involve upgrading HVAC systems, replacing inefficient equipment, or implementing new technologies.
7. Work with other teams, such as the electrical and plumbing teams, to ensure that all mechanical systems in the properties are working together efficiently and effectively.
8. Keep accurate and up-to-date records of all maintenance work carried out, equipment inventories, and any issues that arise. Use this information to track progress, identify trends, and make data-driven decisions.
9. Act as the primary technical point of contact for field staff working on HVAC systems in the properties. Answer questions, provide guidance, and troubleshoot issues as they arise.
10. Regularly monitor the progress of field staff working on HVAC systems in the properties. Provide feedback and guidance as necessary to ensure that work is completed to the required standards.

IN ORDER TO BE CONSIDERED FOR THIS POSITION CANDIDATE MUST BE SERVING PERMANENTLY IN THE TITLE OF ASSISTANT MECHANICAL ENGINEER, OR HAVE APPLIED FOR THE ASSISTANT MECHANICAL ENGINEER CIVIL SERVICE EXAM NUMBER 3109, OR ELIGIBLE UNDER THE 55A PROGRAM.

Minimum Qual Requirements

1. A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college in mechanical engineering and one year of full-time satisfactory experience in mechanical engineering work; or
2. A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college and a Master's degree from an accredited college in mechanical engineering.
