Job Duties:
RECREATION SPECIALIST I duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Provide support and supervision to multiple Before School, After School, and Summer Program staff for school age youth at Virginia Beach Public Schools and community recreation centers, managing and problem solving multiple crisis related tasks
- Assist with site supervision as needed
- Assist in ratio at program sites as needed
- Assist with weekly, monthly and annual reports
- Provide/assist with staff training and development
- Serve on various Out-of-School Time Programs Unit, departmental and City teams and committees, ensuring effective collaborations and partnerships
- Assist with planning and implementation of unit's special events
- Provide quality internal and external customer service via telephone, email, and in person
- Requires a current and valid driver’s license in accordance with DMV driver’s license eligibility requirements.
- Perform other job duties requiring skills, knowledge and physical requirements as demanded by those duties described or less. Individual assignments will be determined by the supervisor based on the current workloads and department needs.

Minimum Requirements:
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Requires a Bachelors degree in recreation management, therapeutic recreation, exercise science, or a related field; OR any combination of education (above the high school level) and/or experience equivalent to four (4) years in fields utilizing the required knowledge, skills, and abilities and associated with such positions as recreation leader or recreation program supervisor.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Must be available to work varied hours, evenings, nights, weekends, holidays and overtime when required to meet operational needs.
May be required to have a current and valid driver’s license.
May require a Commercial driver’s license.
This position may require incumbents to wear and maintain appropriate personal protective equipment such as, but not limited to, steel toed shoes, hard hats, safety glasses, gloves, or other safety attire and equipment in designated areas of risk. Specific requirements will be determined and communicated by the employee’s supervisor based on position assigned.
Alpha I Status: Positions within this class have been designated as Alpha I positions requiring employees to work during inclement weather, regardless of the City’s operational status.

Preferences:
- Experience and background working in large scale youth development recreation programs
- Experience working with school aged youth; knowledge and experience dealing with behavioral issues
- Experience training staff
- Experience working with partnerships/collaborations
- Knowledge of Inclusion
- Experience with direct supervision over multiple sites and staff
- Ability to use Microsoft Office products
- Current CPR and First Aid Certification
- Excellent oral and written communication skills
- Strong organizational skills and ability to effectively multi-task
- Ability to foster and encourage teamwork at all levels
- Related degree in Recreation, Education, Human Services, or Business
Special Instructions:
Out-of-School Time Unit programs operate Monday through Friday, from 6:30 AM – 6:00 PM with occasional weekend work for training and special events. However, this position may work shifts that require the possibility of beginning work at 6:00 AM or ending after the last child is picked up at the end of programs, with the possibility of working split shifts. Additionally, supervisors are expected to be available as needed to meet the needs of staff and customers.
This position may provide direct child care in programs licensed by the State Department of Social Services, convictions of any barrier crime set forth in Virginia Code §63.2-1719 shall be an automatic disqualification for employment in this position.
