Job Duties

The Virginia Department of Health (VDH) is dedicated to protecting and promoting the heath of Virginians. The epidemiology program manager is responsible for managing the Applied Research and Data Integration Program which coordinates activities related to public health research and data integration for Office of Epidemiology. The position will assist with data integration projects between divisions, offices and partners so that public health research and policy questions can be addressed. Work will include assisting with the Office of Epidemiology Annual Report and assistance with research, writing, editing, and collaboration with IRB.

At this level, positions in this role serve as a technical expert performing work of unusual difficulty requiring the independent management and technical supervision of statewide epidemiology programs to include planning, organizing, implementing, and evaluating statewide epidemiology programs, researching and developing statewide policy and plans, as well as, coordinating local, district, and regional program performance. Positions in this role typically manage a departmental or program budget. Positions in this role routinely serve as the Principal Investigator for surveillance and/or research grants, as well as serve as a liaison and mentor for other work units, student internships, practicums, and/or other activities that strengthen the connection for public health workforce development. Positions in this role work under the limited supervision of a division department head while receiving guidance in the form of general goals to be accomplished and broad program policy. Monthly presentations to the Epidemiology Leadership Team will be expected with highlights on what to expect and what recent trends are for Virginians compared to the country.

Minimum Qualifications

Ability to pass pre-appointment criminal records check and background investigation. Comprehensive knowledge of the cause, transmission, treatment, and prevention of communicable and other conditions of public health importance. Comprehensive knowledge of methods of public health surveillance and case, cluster, and outbreak investigations. Comprehensive knowledge of federal and state laws, regulations, and policies regarding the reporting and control of disease. Considerable knowledge of biostatistics, computer data analysis, and data management techniques. Demonstrated ability to develop program goals and objectives and to evaluate program effectiveness. Demonstrated ability to train, supervise, and evaluate subordinates. Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships. Demonstrated ability to collect and organize statistical data. Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing with health care professionals and the general public. Comprehensive experience in epidemiology, public health, or a related area to include experience in supervision or management.

Preferred Qualifications:

Graduation from an accredited college or university with advanced course work in public health, epidemiology, or biostatistics or equivalent combination of education, training, and/or experience. Considerable experience using statistical software packages.
