Basic Function and Responsibility:

The Development Writer is responsible for researching, writing, and producing persuasive and compelling donor-focused communications pieces, including philanthropic gift proposals. The incumbent must be an experienced and effective writer and project manager able to work creatively and collaboratively to produce collateral such as brochures, one-pagers, multi-page case statements, stewardship messages, internal briefing documents, and other fundraising communications.

The Development Writer must possess versatile writing and editing skills, including knowledge of interview techniques, ability to translate technical information for lay audiences, aptitude for creating multiple types of content, and a talent for researching and writing compelling cases for support to be shared with donors and prospects. The ideal candidate will be flexible and deadline-driven, able to drive project management, with the ability to write donor-facing materials and use templates or work with a designer to bring materials to life.

As a member of the Development Team, this person will be expected to drive discussions and collaboration with colleagues across campus to maximize philanthropic support of the university. They will serve as an in-house expert on development proposals, consulting with colleagues to share best practices as well as industry standards.

  • Highly developed written communications skills
  • Ability to conduct research and interviews, and to synthesize large amounts of information in a clear, accurate way for a general audience
  • Broad knowledge of nonprofit fundraising processes
  • Bachelor’s degree with strong English writing capabilities or equivalent years of relevant work experience
  • Four to six years of professional experience to include a strong background in writing compelling copy, preferably in higher education or fundraising writing
  • Familiarity with Adobe InDesign and Photoshop
