This position directs security operations and oversees the facility education programming, cultural activities, and inmate housing for a Women’s Prison correctional institution to ensure staff understand and are implementing institutional policies and procedures that ensure the safety and security of employees and inmates.
This position is integral to shaping and molding the culture of the facility as well as enhancing the security and safety systems and practices within the facility by ensuring safe programming while providing structure and control.
The incumbent acts as a Duty Officer on a rotating basis, making major institution decisions after normal working hours and on weekends to include initiation or continuation of emergency response activities.
This position also maintains security and order through daily supervision and management of captains, lieutenants, sergeants, and unit staff including unit managers and unit coordinators.
Duties will include:
- managing staff and inmate activities relating to security operations for an assigned area of a correctional institution.
- assisting with staff and inmate investigations.
- providing oversight and direction to facility staff.
- supervising the facility's Cultural Affairs lead.
- reviewing inmate-submitted project applications and making recommendations to Warden or designee for response.
- ensuring inmate cultural activities are managed in accordance with DOC policy.
- overseeing operations of the inmate housing units to include daily inmate activity and staff assigned to work in those areas. This includes both security staff and the unit management team.
- performing administrative duties as a member of the senior staff of the institution; being the liaison between senior staff and correctional staff; and being the contact person in the absence of the warden.
- attending meetings with senior staff and providing information and input into the development and implementation of policies and operational procedures.
- participating in the development of institutional budgets.
- supervising Unit Managers across the institution.
- ensuring inmate housing is managed in accordance with DOC policy.
- overseeing the Inmate Disciplinary process to ensure it is in accordance with DOC policy.
- interviewing and selecting staff.
- providing training and work direction.
- conducting performance reviews and completing performance documents.
- participating in the duty officer on-call rotation.
- performing other work as assigned.
- five (5) or more years in broad-based, progressive managerial or administrative experience in an adult or juvenile corrections environment.
- knowledge of the multi-disciplinary team process as it relates to offender classification, job assignments, and offender movement.
- knowledge of principles and practices of correctional administration and rehabilitation, attitudes, problems, and behavior of inmates, work requirements of the facility, institution, sanitation, health and safety standards, roster management, incarcerated individual classification and record keeping.
- excellent communication skills and ability to liaison with other state and community agencies.
- strong working knowledge of management principles, staff supervision skills, and safety and security issues, and demonstrated commitment to workforce inclusion and staff development.
Ability to:
- supervise operations and programs of a correctional institution.
- establish and maintain effective working relationships with inmates, subordinate employees, and representatives of public and private agencies.
- effectively analyze situations and exercise judgment and discretion in establishing, applying, and interpreting departmental policies and procedures.
- resolve systems problems and organizational conflicts.
- conduct investigations and evaluate findings.
- remain calm during stressful situations and react quickly in emergencies.
