Job Duties:
The Virginia Aquarium is looking for an energetic, enthusiastic individual with experience in a retail setting to provide exceptional guest service that transforms a day at the Aquarium from ordinary to extraordinary.
The Assistant Aquarium Store Manager will greet all guests in the line of sight with a smile and a verbal greeting. They will be expected to drive sales through the engagement of customers, suggestive selling, and sharing product knowledge. The Assistant Aquarium Store Manager will assist the store supervisor in the management of both Gift Shops at the Virginia Aquarium & Marine Science Center. This is a working key holder position that includes selling merchandise, merchandising the sales floor, and directing staff.
Responsibilities:
- Greet all guests in line of sight with a smile, a verbal greeting, and approachable friendliness.
- Act as a host to each guest by demonstrating behavior that supports a positive, cheerful, and professional attitude.
- Responsible and accountable for cash in assigned safe each day. Responsible for daily balancing of cash safe, cash drawers, and making daily cash drops.
- Directs daily scheduled staff, ensuring all procedures and policies are being followed. Assist in training new staff as needed.
- Assist guests in a friendly and positive manner by using your knowledge of Aquarium offerings, membership, and general information.
- Sell merchandise through a POS system, run reports, answer questions about the merchandise, maintain a clean and organized sales floor, and restock merchandise.
- Receive payment by cash, credit cards, or vouchers. Issue receipts, refunds, or change due to the guest.
- Work in a fast-paced environment and process customers in an expedient and friendly manner.
- Go beyond what is expected – deliver personal experiences that inspire, delight, and engage.
- Become familiar with the Aquarium’s story – history, accomplishments, and future goals.
- Project a professional image while in uniform.

Minimum Requirements:
MINIMUMS: High school or GED plus one (1) year of experience in fields providing the required knowledge, skills and abilities; or any combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities. SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: All employees may be expected to work hours in excess of their normally scheduled hours in response to short-term department needs and/or City-wide emergencies.

Attachments Required:
Preferences:
Two (2) or more years of customer service experience in a retail setting.
Experience opening and closing a retail establishment including balancing cash drawers.
Experience creating displays and merchandising.
Experience with directing and training staff.
Experience using computer programs for writing emails, scheduling, sales reports, and other retail-related tasks.
Demonstrated attention to detail.
Ability to juggle many tasks calmly and efficiently in a fast-paced setting.
Responsible person with ability to recognize potential problems and report them to a supervisor.
