JOB DESCRIPTION - Assistant Parks and Recreation Director
JOB TITLE: Assistant Parks and Recreation Director
DEPARTMENT: Parks and Recreation
REPORTS TO: Parks and Recreation Director
STATUS: Regular Full Time, Non-union, Exempt

SUMMARY: Responsible for planning and delivery of facility operations including fitness center, pools and waterpark, recreation events and programs. Represents the Director of Parks and Recreation in his/her absence.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following: Other duties may be assigned.
Supports the Director in the management and maintenance of fitness center, outdoor waterpark, fields, playgrounds and parks.
Helps determine recreation program offerings based on assessment of consumer needs and interests. Schedules programs and activities, determines and arranges for appropriate locations, secures required staff.
Assists in the design and implementation of large-scale community events.
Assists in the development and monitoring of department operating and capital budget.
Works with Parks and Recreation Director to develop individual program and facility budgets and maintain cost recovery efforts.
Develops job descriptions for recreation staff, assists in hiring process, schedules and evaluates staff performance for all fitness center and outdoor waterpark staff.
Recruits, interviews, recommends for hire, plans, trains, schedules, supervises, and evaluates all management and reception staff for fitness center and outdoor waterpark.
Designs and conducts training programs for staff including training on the proper operation of pools and equipment, safety practices and emergency procedures.
Develops, updates and supervises all policies and procedures related to operation and management of the Fitness Center, outdoor waterpark and all department amenities.
Oversees the maintenance and repair of Twinsburg Fitness Center, indoor pool and waterpark including daily cleaning procedures. Works with appropriate staff to assure that a safe and healthy environment that meets or exceeds all applicable government and industry standards is maintained.
Updates and maintains inventory of program equipment and supplies; develops manuals; drafts policy and procedure documents. Ensures that equipment is working properly and is properly maintained.
Oversees, maintains pool chemical and safety operations for indoor and outdoor pool facilities. Ensures that accurate records are created and maintained as required by law. Ensures that pools are maintained in accordance with legal requirements.
Works with high school athletic director and physical education department to set up school district use of facilities.
Works with Group Activity Coordinators to plan, organize, coordinate, schedule, and supervise a comprehensive Aquatics and Fitness program.
Directs preparation and execution of the annual program of activities for department amenities.
Consults and advises with various entities and staff regarding facility changes, additions, floor plans and/or staff reorganization.
Maintains proficiency with the Peak Sportsman program and other computer programs necessary for daily tasks and assignments.
Assists the director with preparing financial, activity, attendance, maintenance and other department reports.
Ensures that equipment, operating systems and facilities are in good repair and are maintained in a legally compliant manner. Makes recommendations to director for equipment, facility updates and equipment maintenance, repair and replacement.
Communicates timely and accurately and interacts with community members and guests to ensure safe, appropriate use of the facilities.
Supports all department staff and any other facility area as needed.
Responds to public inquiries, requests for assistance and complaints.
Serves as City"s representative to various youth groups, city functions, seminars and clinics when needed as they relate to the Fitness Center and Parks & Recreation Department.
Participates in meetings with Mayor, City Council and commissions.
Regular, in-person attendance.
May be required to provide life-saving assistance such as CPR; must exercise good judgment during emergency situations;
Performs all other duties as assigned.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: Manages subordinate supervisor (s), employees and custodial staff within the Fitness Center. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization"s policies, procedures and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, recommending, and training employees; planning, assigning and directing work and programming; appraising performance; reward and discipline of employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE: Bachelor"s Degree in Recreation Administration or related field preferred. Minimum of three years of Recreation Administration experience or other related program area, one (1) of which must be in a supervisory capacity; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
LANGUAGE SKILLS: Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to communicate effectively.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS: Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.
REASONING ABILITY: Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral diagram, or schedule form. Ability to recognize potentially unsafe conditions and behaviors and correct them in a positive and appropriate manner.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS: Must possess current American Red Cross Lifeguarding Certificate; Water Safety Instructor; First Aid and CPR/PR certification. Must possess or obtain with first month of employment: Certified Pool Spa Operator or comparable certification.
