The State of New Hampshire, Office of the Child Advocate has a full time vacancy for a Legal Aide.

Summary:
To perform legal duties and diverse research and reporting duties associated with achieving the objectives of the Office of the Child Advocate.

Responsibilities:

Compiles information from children’s records, service contracts, agency policy and procedure, and statutes for use in preparation of legal case and system reviews.


Researches child-related scientific and professional literature for use in legal case and system reviews.


Prepares correspondence for the purpose of requesting and obtaining review data.


Interviews prospective witnesses to obtain and develop evidence and facts to evaluate service delivery and incidents.


Accurately enters data into records management and data tracking systems.


Synthesizes and summarizes data in draft case and system reviews or legal briefings.


Reviews complaints by the public, agency personnel and other constituents concerning alleged violations.


Provides general information about child-serving systems to constituents.


Collects and maintains document control and organization of legal case files.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Education: Associate’s degree from a recognized college or university with major study in business administration, political science or related field. Each additional year of approved formal education may be substituted for one year of required work experience.


Experience : Two years’ experience in a legal office, performing law-related research with one year of experience in administrative support activities. Each additional year of approved work experience may be substituted for one year of required formal education.


License/Certification: Valid driver’s license and access to vehicle for statewide travel.


RECOMMENDED WORK TRAITS:
Knowledge of the Federal and State laws applicable to the Office of the Child Advocate and children’s services. Knowledge of legal terminology. Ability to observe and collect facts and evidence. Ability to conduct legal research and apply statutory law to individual cases. Ability to interview persons to obtain information gained from various sources. Ability to follow a case to completion or conclusion. Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, public and private agencies and the general public. Must be willing to maintain appearance appropriate to assigned duties and responsibilities as determined by the agency appointing authority.
