Position Overview

The Bureau of Country Fairs and Horse Racing is looking to hire an Administrative Assistant to work with County Fairs statewide and organizations participating in Illinois standardbred, thoroughbred, and quarter horse racing and breeding industries. The Bureau registers mares and foals, certifies stallions, promulgates rules, and works with breed associations, county fairs, and racetracks to promote, schedule and fund races restricted to Illinois-bred horses. This position will develop effective working relationships with a variety of programs to encourage the agricultural education of youth by providing premium reimbursement for exhibitors at county fairs, 4-H fairs and Future Farmers of America (FFA) section of the fairs. The Administrative Assistant II directly supports county fairs by providing reimbursement for rehabilitation and maintenance of their fairgrounds. We welcome interested applicants who are enthusiastic to learn the provisions of the Illinois Agriculture Fair Act and collaborate with the county fairs throughout Illinois, expositions, 4-H programs and Vocational Agriculture (Vo-Ag) fairs.

Job Responsibilities

25% 1. Organizes, administers and coordinates all activities, procedures and policies for county fairs, expositions, 4-H programs and Vocational Agriculture (Vo-Ag) fairs to participate in the programs provided for in the Illinois Agricultural Fair Act.

25% 2. Reconciles expenditures for the Bureau of County Fairs & Horse Racing (CF&HR) locally held funds with the approved budget.

20% 3. Interprets, explains, implements and monitors human resources procedures, policies, laws and regulations.

15% 4. Performs liaison work between the Public Information Office, the Non-Fair events program coordinator, Illinois State Fair and Du Quoin State Fair.

10% 5. Provides advice and recommendations for program improvements to the Bureau Chief by performing statewide functions in the planning, development and execution of policies, programs and operating procedures for administration of the Illinois Agricultural Fair Act.

05% 6. Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of those enumerated above.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Requires knowledge, skill and mental development equivalent to completion of four years of college, preferably with courses in public or business administration.
  • Requires two years of professional experience in a public or private organization
