Summary

This position is located in Region 4 on the Bridger-Teton National Forest, Jackson Ranger District.

This position serves as the Director of the Forest Service Avalanche Center and is responsible for avalanche forecasting, overseeing field operations, coordinating avalanche education and maintaining collaborative partnerships.

Responsibilities

  • Directs and conducts field work and oversees the development of avalanche advisories and avalanche warnings.
  • Makes interpretations of snow stability and, in conjunction with other observations from field personnel, issues daily avalanche hazard advisories and warnings to the public.
  • Evaluates National Weather Service products and observations to create a daily mountain weather forecast, which is included in the avalanche advisories.
  • Conducts snow stability tests and records snowpack observations in the field.
  • Using professional judgment and experience, determines when avalanche conditions have abated sufficiently to recommend termination of existing avalanche warnings.
  • Supervises and directs the maintenance and operation of avalanche weather stations within the forecast area.
  • Collaborates with non-profit partners and other government agencies.
  • Oversees and prepares program budgets for the avalanche center. Prepares short and long range plans.
  • Efficiently navigates mountainous terrain in a harsh winter environment using backcountry skis and snowmobiles to safely access observation sites, maintain equipment and access conditions.
  • Performs supervisory duties 20% of the time.

    Qualifications

    Basic Requirement:

    GS-1301: Degree: physical science, engineering, or mathematics that included 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science such as mechanics, dynamics, properties of materials, and electronics.
    OR
    Combination of education and experience - education equivalent to one of the majors shown in A above that included at least 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science, plus appropriate experience or additional education.


    In addition to meeting the basic requirement, you must also possess experience and/or directly related education in the amounts listed below.

    Specialized Experience Requirement:
    For the GS-11: You must have one year specialized experience equivalent to the GS-09 in the Federal service OR 3 years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. degree or Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree (coursework directly related to the position being filled, such as physical science, engineering, mathematics, etc) OR an appropriate combination of specialized experience and graduate level education (beyond what is required for a master's degree, i.e., more than 36 semester hours leading to a Ph.D.) Qualifying graduate level education may include physical science, engineering, mathematics.

    Specialized experience is defined to include at least three or more of the following: Observing, collecting and analyzing scientific snow properties in order to forecast avalanche conditions and mountain weather; Pursuing, developing and/or fostering long term partnerships with private businesses and public agencies to acquire funding and support for the program; Preparing operational budgets and participating in grants and agreements management; Serving as a local point of contact for all media communications regarding avalanches; Conducting and coordinating avalanche education and awareness to partners and/or the general public; Advanced back-country mountaineering skills, and the ability to operate snowmobiles and ski safely in mountainous avalanche terrain.

    This position has a seasonal work schedule, where full-time work is guaranteed for 18 pay periods and when not working, you will be placed in non-pay/non-duty status.
