Seeking a conscientious, self-motivated, detail oriented individual for the position of Probation & Parole Officer I or II at the Bennington Probation & Parole Office. The work will be performed in an office setting with field work required. Scheduled hours from 7:45 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. Travel and outside training will be required.

Class Definition
Specialized professional casework, social work, counseling, unit program direction, or restorative services for the Department of Corrections providing services to offenders in community setting. Duties include designing, administering, and monitoring services for a client's immediate and long-range needs. Duties also include addressing the needs of victims and the community through restorative case planning.

Incumbents will engage in risk control and risk management services as part of a supervision team in a Probation and Parole Office for the Department of Corrections. Duties involve supervision and monitoring of an assigned caseload of offenders in the Pre-Approved Furlough, Supervised Community Sentence, Probation, Parole, or furlough re-integration. Work is performed in accordance with correctional policies, directives, and procedures.

Incumbents must form working relationships with clients, act as role models, and work with other DOC staff, community service providers, and community boards as appropriate. Liaison with other correctional units and human service agencies, both public and private, may be required. Duties are performed under close supervision of a Correctional Program Supervisor or District Manager.

Incumbents are required to attend mandatory training and gain certifications as determined by the department. This is the second level of two in the Probation & Parole Officer series. Progression and promotion from level one, which is not automatic, is based upon completion of required training, demonstration of key skills and possession of core competencies, as well as a current performance rating of at least satisfactory.

Environmental Factors
Work is performed in a field office, correctional and community setting and includes frequent interaction with potentially dangerous correctional clients. High stress may be present, as is some danger of assault. Evening, weekend, and alternating shift duty required to provide necessary services and supervision. Field travel is necessary and incumbents may be required to provide private means of transportation. Work related court, community meeting, and Parole Board appearances may be anticipated.
Minimum Qualifications
Master's degree in social work, criminal justice, human services, psychology or a related discipline


Bachelor's degree AND eighteen (18) months or more of experience in human services casework


High school diploma or equivalent AND three (3) years or more of human services casework experience


Two (2) years or more as a Probation & Parole Officer I AND satisfactory completion of training required by the department.
Preferred Qualifications
Bachelor's degree or higher in social work, criminal justice, human services, psychology or a related discipline and experience in the delivery of casework, planning, and evaluation of offenders in a correctional setting.

Military experience.
