Position: Outreach Intern
Duration: 3 Month Fellowship (12 weeks): Starting May 2021 - August 2021 (dates are dependent upon the start date)
Location: Muscatatuck National Wildlife Refuge, 12985 E. U.S. Hwy. 50, Seymour, IN 47274
Fellowship Description:
The Muscatatuck National Wildlife Refuge is nearly 8,000 acres composed of a variety of habitats including wetlands, forests and grasslands managed for the primary purpose of conserving migratory birds. It is located within an hour of Indianapolis IN, Louisville KY, and Cincinnati OH, and attracts about 175,000 visitors per year. The refuge provides many opportunities for outdoor recreation, including hunting, fishing, wildlife photography, wildlife observation, environmental education, and interpretation.
Fellows will develop new outreach programs specifically geared towards the local Hispanic community. Projects could include researching how the Hispanic community perceives the refuge, working with the Refuge’s Urban partners, designing bilingual brochures, setting up informational booths at community events, and planning and implementing a new community outreach event on the refuge. Fellow will also assist refuge staff with other visitor services duties, which include events, light maintenance, volunteer management, etc.
Fellows will work and communicate with a HAF Program Manager during their fellowship. Fellows will be expected to participate in scheduled conference calls, webinars, and meetings conducted throughout their term. Fellows will capture photos and/or videos for reporting purposes and submit 3 blog posts highlighting their experience and development.
The Ideal Candidate:
- Comfortable working independently outside, in all weather conditions
- Is good at networking and creating partnerships
- Is proficient in and enjoys writing and communicating clearly
- Has excellent customer service skills
- Has confidence in their ability to conduct successful interviews with a diversity of individuals;
- Is able to listen, ask questions and capture conversations resulting from the interviews
- Has the ability to plan and implement a wildlife dependent community event
Minimum Qualifications:
- Ages 18 to 30; up to 35 for veterans
- Available to work full-time (40 hours per week) for 12 weeks/3 months
- Driver’s license required
- Fellow will be required to drive a government vehicle
- 3rd or 4th year undergraduate student, recent grads, or young professionals
- Preferred majors include: Natural Sciences, Social Science, Park Management or Education
- US citizenship or permanent residency. Interns must undergo a government background check if selected.
- Bilingual in Spanish preferred but not required
Stipend + Benefits:
- $400 weekly pay stipend based on a 40-hour workweek*
- Free onsite housing available
- Weekly commuting stipend available (up to budget limits)
- $500 transportation stipend to cover relocation costs
- Public Land Corp Eligibility – after completing 640 hours, PLC status provides special non-competitive hiring status when applying for federal positions
- This is a 1099 position. Persons paid on a 1099 basis are independent contractors and are self-employed. Independent contractors are required to pay all self-employment taxes (Social Security & Medicare) as well as income tax.
