Government Finance Internship

The Town of Essex and Village of Essex Junction are served by a consolidated Finance Department. A unique model of shared governmental services, Essex is a fast paced, complex financial environment. The team consists of five highly qualified and experienced professionals who approach their work with enthusiasm and dedication. Essex Finance manages the finances of two legally separate entities with combined budgets exceeding $36 million and spanning twenty two funds. Applicants will gain exposure to the following fund types: general funds, capital project funds, special revenue funds, enterprise funds, and agency funds.

Responsibilities

• Assist with billing and collections of water/sewer accounts and miscellaneous receivables including delinquent notices.
• Maintenance and update of accounting procedures, as necessary.
• Process accounts payable invoices including vendor maintenance and ensuring proper documentation is attained.
• Reconciliation of various general ledger accounts including various bank accounts.
• Administrative assistance including scanning and electronic filing of various financial documents.
• Answering finance department phone.
• Assist with month-end closing procedures and reporting.
• Other miscellaneous duties include providing back-up assistance in weekly payroll, quarterly payroll reporting, and daily cash receipts when needed.
• Assist with cash management activities such as evaluating current balances, required balances, and directing investments.
• Assist with budgeting for governmental, capital, and enterprise funds.
• Opportunity to interact with elected officials and present at public meetings.
• Complete special projects and other duties, as assigned.

Pay and Hours Worked

The pay will be approximately $16.00 per hour; no other benefits are provided. Anticipated work hours range from 20 to 32 per week and are negotiable based on the needs of the department and applicant. A final schedule will be determined at time of offer.

Education and Experience

Must be actively enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program at an accredited local University, with a major in Accounting, Public Administration or other relevant area with current GPA of 3.0 or above. Successful completion of or current enrollment in Governmental Accounting course(s) preferred.
