Summary

This position is located with the Bureau of Indian Affairs, Superintendent - Yankton Agency, Natural Resources, in Wagner, South Dakota.


NOTE:
TRAVEL AND RELOCATION EXPENSES WILL NOT BE AUTHORIZED. ANY RELOCATION EXPENSES ASSOCIATED WITH REPORTING FOR DUTY WILL BE THE RESPONSIBILITY OF THE SELECTED EMPLOYEE.

Responsibilities

  • Provides technical support for Soil and Moisture conservation programs on land that often has numerous heirs and is characterized by unusual environmental conditions.
  • Attends formal conservation meetings at the local level to provide and/or gather technical information on application schedules, new programs and changes in any conservation techniques that may be taking place.
  • Assist in developing lease stipulations for agricultural leases to ensure maximum income is achieved for the landowner while protecting and improving the land resource.
  • Responsible for conducting and reporting on field inspections to ensure compliance with the Plan of Conservation Operations.
  • Develops conservation plans for Allotments involving familiar agricultural objectives and treatments.
  • Advises landowners and land users on practices that may be involved in the conservation plan that may include cross fencing, stock water development, critical area planning conservation cropping systems, shelter belts and weed and rodent control.
  • Inspects and certifies construction of practices to verify compliance with design and specifications.
  • Provides information on agricultural assistance available to implement conservation measures.
  • Provides land descriptions for tribal members whom seek homesite and/or residential leases.

    INDIVIDUAL OCCUPATION REQUIREMENT FOR GS-0458 SERIES:

    GS-7: One (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-6 grade level in the Federal service assisting in soil conservation measures or range management activities necessary in securing proper land use and development. Examples of qualifying specialized experience include: Installing and maintaining conservation measures on public or privately owned land including parks, shoreline, refuse waste sites, dams and reservoir areas, water and sewer sites, road embankments, forests, and wildlife habitats; and Installing and maintaining soil and water conservation measures on farms, ranches, or agricultural land
    OR
    EDUCATION: 1 full year of directly related graduate education (18 semester hours, 27 quarter hours or equivalent).

    GS-6: One (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-5 grade level in the Federal service assisting in soil conservation measures or range management activities necessary in securing proper land use and development. Examples of qualifying specialized experience include: Installing and maintaining conservation measures on public or privately owned land including parks, shoreline, refuse waste sites, dams and reservoir areas, water and sewer sites, road embankments, forests, and wildlife habitats; and Installing and maintaining soil and water conservation measures on farms, ranches, or agricultural land.

    GS-5: One (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-4 grade level in the Federal service assisting in soil conservation or range activities. Examples of qualifying specialized experience include: Installing and maintaining conservation measures on public or privately owned land including parks, shoreline, refuse waste sites, dams and reservoir areas, water and sewer sites, road embankments, forests, and wildlife habitats; and Installing and maintaining soil and water conservation measures on farms, ranches, or agricultural land
    OR
    EDUCATION: Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree (a) with major study in forestry, range management, agriculture, or a subject-matter field directly related to the position, or (b) that included at least 24 semester hours in any combination of courses such as forestry, agriculture, crop or plant science, range management or conservation, wildlife management, watershed management, soil science, natural resources (except marine fisheries and oceanography), outdoor recreation management, civil or forest engineering, or wildland fire science. No more than 6 semester hours in mathematics is creditable.

    GRADUATE EDUCATION: Graduate education must be related to the occupation and demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work.

    SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSA's) to perform successfully the duties of the position and is typically in or related to the position to be filled.
