Position Overview
This position is located within the Current Planning Section of the Planning Department. Employees in the class process applications for rezoning of properties located within the County and eight municipalities; aid public in the understanding and accomplishment of compliance with the County and eight municipal subdivision and zoning ordinances and the review processes; and independently represents the County and this department as the assigned planner assisting town governments as assigned with planning and zoning services.
Examples of Duties
- Process all applications for rezoning, initial zoning, conditional zoning, conditional use district and permit, and land development-related text amendments (typically zoning, subdivision and watershed ordinances) for Cumberland County and eight municipalities
- Reviews the rezoning application for completeness and accuracy; and discusses the plans with the applicant to ensure the requested zoning will allow the intended use and is consistent with adopted plans and policies
- Respond to public contact via walk in, telephone and email explaining procedures, rules and processes
- Applies land development regulations and reviews the same specific to an application.
Minimum Qualifications
Graduation from a college or university with a degree in urban or regional planning, geography, public administration, engineering, community development, or a related field, and one year of experience in technical and administrative support work preferably in a local government planning office; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Knowledge of the principles and practices of community and economic development and public sector planning and/or landscape design
- Knowledge of governmental laws, programs, and services pertinent to the community and economic development and planning processes
