Description

The City of Davis Parks & Community Services offers a skateboard camp for youth, 6 to 12 years of age. The Skateboard Camp Senior Recreation Leader must be able to successfully instruct one week sessions of skate camp located at the Davis Skate Park. This position plans, oversees and evaluates all camp related activities, including supervision of camp staff and volunteers, youth participants and camp activities. Successful candidates will have the ability to communicate effectively with children and adults as well as organize and implement activities that create a positive learning environment for everyone involved. Candidates must be prepared to demonstrate skateboarding skills and use effective communication skills to instruct diverse learners.

Must be available to work Monday through Friday between the hours of 8:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. (schedule may vary) during the weeks of June 28 – July 2, July 19 – 23, August 2 – 6, and August 9 – 13, 2021. Must also attend Tuesday evening staff meetings during the summer dates, and participate in mandatory trainings on June 5 with additional TBD trainings prior to the start of camps.

Hourly wage: Community Services Specialist III - $15.38 - $16.15 per hour

Responsibilities:
  • Ability to interact positively as an effective member of a working team
  • Responsible for planning, instructing, and supervising
  • Demonstrate and instruct youth on basic skateboarding safety, skills, and tricks
  • Organize effective instruction that maximizes the learning experience within a limited time frame
  • Collect necessary forms and be responsible for keeping accurate records, time sheets, and attendance
  • Respond and address emergencies and injuries immediately
  • Promote safe use and stewardship of local skate park
  • Demonstrate positive customer service skills when communicating with participants, parents and staff

Typical Qualifications

Qualifications:
  • Must be 18 years or older prior to the start of the summer programs
  • Must be certified in CPR and Standard First Aid by June 1
  • Ability to demonstrate energy, enthusiasm, and creativity in the job position
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships and communication with other program staff and community members
  • Having related experience working with children is highly desirable

Experience and Training: M: Must have a background in skateboarding. A minimum two years of experience working in youth programs and supervising others or an equivalent setting is preferred. Advanced education in recreation or similar coursework may substitute for a portion of the required work experience.

Physical/Sensory Requirements: Staff should be prepared to work outdoors, in various environmental conditions each week. Staff are required to wear a mask/face covering and should be prepared to demonstrate physical social distancing standards in line with current guidelines and requirements to keep all staff and participants safe. The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this position. This is an active position requiring the ability to stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, reach, stand, walk and occasionally lift and/or move objects up to 50 lbs.; verbal and hearing skills to effectively communicate with children and other staff; visual acuity to oversee projects, and make observations. Work is done both indoors and out, with exposure to heat, often over 100 degrees, sun, noise, dust, pollens and slip hazards when near water. Potential for exposure to blood borne pathogens when rendering first aid.
