About the Job

You will perform journey-level maintenance, repair, and operation of mowing and related grounds maintenance equipment; application of herbicides; and performs maintenance repair activities such as minor building electrical, carpentry, plumbing and other routine repairs such as sidewalk and minor road repairs.

A Day in the LIfe

The essential functions of this role are as follows:

  • Oversees mowing and grounds keeping to include snow removal for MUTC;
  • Coordinates, plans, and oversees daily work of assigned State Employees and IDOC offender work crew to ensure work is completed in safe, timely manner;
  • Obtains and maintains certification to procure, mix, and apply herbicides;
  • May train lower level maintenance personnel;
  • Documents work orders in the approved electronic system;
  • Studies blueprints and schematics and determines methods, materials, and equipment needed to complete the assignment;
  • Coordinates with other work centers, operations, and customers on a daily basis to ensure work flow does not interfere with other training, testing or functions;
  • Cleans and lubricates equipment, and maintains records on equipment status and maintenance;
  • Inspects and evaluates assigned equipment and vehicles to ensure that they operates efficiently and safely;

What You'll Need for Success

  • Three (3) years of experience in small engine repair or completion of accredited college/vocational training in small engine repair. Possess current certification to apply herbicides within Indiana.
  • Must have and maintain a valid Driver’s License.
  • Ability to occasionally lift, carry, push and pull up to 50 pounds, and walk/stand for extended periods, climb ladders and structures, kneel and crouch and bend.
  • Must have at least average physical strength with agility and dexterity.
  • Ability to endure exposure to inclement weather.
  • Thorough knowledge of small engine operation, maintenance, and repairs and operation and maintenance of commercial mowing equipment.
  • Knowledge of the potential occupational hazards connected with mowing and herbicide application and the safety standards and practices, which should be applied.
  • Skill in the installation of mechanical components related to mowing equipment.
  • Skill in diagnosing the cause of mechanical breakdowns.
  • Ability to interpret and apply blueprints, schematics, maintenance manuals, and assembly instructions.
  • Ability to study and comprehend new technology.
  • Ability to make mathematical computations required for calculating herbicide application.
  • Ability to work from ladders, scaffolds, tunnels and crawl spaces.
  • Ability to train and instruct others in the work.
  • Working knowledge of appropriate safety requirements and IDEM/EPA rules.
  • Ability to read and/or follow instructions in equipment manuals, Technical Manuals, Safety Data Sheets (SDS), drawings, etc.
  • Ability to lift heavy equipment and tools in making repairs.

Supervisory Responsibilities/Direct Reports:

This role may serve as a team lead for an assigned work group.
This role provides supervision for offenders and requires a high level of judgment and care.
