General Description


Performs highly-skilled transportation maintenance work. Skillfully operates one or more types of complex heavy equipment such as a tractor-trailer haul truck including loading and securing multiple complex pieces of heavy and light equipment on haul trailers, motor grader, large gradall, heavy bulldozer, crane, herbicide truck, heavy asphalt paving machine, self-propelled asphalt distributor, profiling/milling machine, and dump truck. Work requires contact with private entities. Employees at this level perform work independently on assignments; however, all unusual issues are referred to the supervisor.

Duties


General Transp Spec I

The essential duties for this job include:

  • Assists in inspection of roadways during day and night to identify damaged and missing delineators and signs.
  • Assists in providing support to local law enforcement officials at accident sites; assists stranded motorists as required.
  • Assists in sanding or cleaning bridges and roads, posting warning signs, helping the public and performing other work as directed during emergency situations such as floods, tornadoes, hurricanes, snowstorms, accidents and hazardous material spills.
  • Assists with traffic control; places and gathers cones, warning signs and barricades; flags traffic.
  • Maintains highways and rights-of-way; troubleshoots and performs highly-skilled roadway repairs; assists in erecting and repairing guard rails, highway markers and signs.
  • May serve as a lead worker.
  • Monitors and fills out various required reports including time-keeping, equipment forms, inventory, accident forms, PMI and records work in progress.
  • Operates heavy equipment such as a front-end loader-one and a half cubic yards or more, tractor-trailer haul truck, large dragline, shovel, paint striper and dump truck.
  • Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.

Education


This job requires the following:

  • None in formal education

Work Experience


This job requires the following:

  • 5 years in in Maintenance, Construction and/or equipment operation & repair
  • (Experience can be satisfied by fulltime or prorated parttime equivalent)
  • No supervisory experience required.
  • Related College education or relevant technical training may be substituted for experience on a year per year basis.

Licenses and Certifications


The following Licenses and Certifications are required for this job:

  • Safety Impact Certificate
  • Commercial Driver Certificate
  • Commercial Driver License Class A (Required at time of Application)

Safety Impact is not required at the time of application. Safety Certification will be issued by TxDOT at the time of hire.

Other Conditions:

  • This is a Safety Impact position as well as a Commercial Driver position and will be subject to random drug testing.
  • This position requires you to drive for TxDOT.

Conditions of Employment


Conditions for this Position: Standards of Employment

  • **Safety Impact certificate is not required at the time of application. As required, the Safety Impact will be issued by TxDOT at the time of hire.
  • Required to report to duty within 1 hour when "On Call"
  • Required to respond on nights and weekends in emergency situations.
  • Required to work weekends and holidays.
  • Required to work hours other than 8 to 5.
  • Required to respond during emergency operations.
  • Required to work under exposure to inclement weather conditions.
  • Required to wear personal protective equipment provided by employer and comply with all safety requirements.
  • Must attend work regularly and observe approved work hours
