This position supports the Federal Retirement Thrift Investment Board (FRTIB) in the administration of the Thrift Savings Plan (TSP), the world’s largest tax-deferred, defined contribution plan, in support of over 6 million participants. This 401(k) type plan, similar to private sector plans, provides roughly 91% of civilian federal employees and 61% of uniformed service members the opportunity to save for retirement. It was established by Congress in the Federal Employees' Retirement System Act of 1986 and offers the same types of savings and tax benefits that many private corporations offer their employees under 401(k) plans. The FRTIB’s mission is to administer the TSP solely in the interest of its participants and beneficiaries.

The Benefits Analyst is responsible for reviewing, analyzing, and processing incoming documents for validity in accordance with the Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) and FRTIB policies and guidelines. This includes researching and reviewing accounts, performing data entry, sending appropriate notices, and communicating with various entities (e.g. the FRTIB, participants, and other contractors) towards resolving processing issues.

In the Benefits Analyst role you will:
  • Work under the direction of a Task Lead or Supervisor and is responsible for performing the duties and requirements of the position with minimal supervision
  • Validity determinations and communications are made by the Benefits Analyst and are confirmed by a quality control Benefits Administrator
  • Research, analyze, and evaluate incoming forms for the death benefits processing unit
  • Follow pre-established guidelines and procedures to perform in a fast-paced, production oriented environment
  • Accurately enter data into systems applications, Excel spreadsheets or other support tools,
  • Effectively communicate, both orally and in writing
  • Utilize multiple systems to compare data, and apply rules and procedures to deliver the correct determination
  • Use discretion and have the ability to make determinations, while multi-tasking and meeting production and quality standards
Qualifications:
To be successful in this role, you will have:
  • A high school diploma
  • 2 years of relevant experience
  • Strong analytical skills.
  • Strong communication (written and verbal) skills required to communicate effectively with participants and potential payees.
  • Attention to detail and strong organizational skills.
  • Self-motivated, dynamic work ethic to ensure maximum customer satisfaction is delivered.
  • Commitment to excellence in all work situations.
  • Working knowledge and experience of computer applications, including MS Office, and/or business office systems.
  • Multi-tasking and prioritizing competing deadlines.
  • Handling difficult and sensitive situations, using sound and independent judgment within general policies and guidelines.
  • Communicating effectively with co-workers, superiors, and others sufficient to exchange or convey information.
  • Must be able to obtain and/or maintain a Public Trust Clearance.

Office location is in Fairfax, VA. Due to the current pandemic, candidates may be assigned to telework temporarily; On site work at our Fairfax, VA location will be required once safety restrictions are lifted.
