Job Objective & Safety/Security Sensitive Designation

Job Description/Objective: Volunteers are needed to assist in many aspects of the Little Rock Zoo, including but not limited to special events such as Dollar Day, Wild Wines, Zoo Brew, Fall Festivals, Animal Birthday Parties, Awareness Days, Biofact Tables, Information Stations, Exhibit Interpretation Stations and Zoofari Camps.

This position is not designated as a safety/security sensitive position and is not subject to random drug and alcohol screening.


Essential Functions

Some activities that may be performed are:

  • Assisting zoo guests
  • Directing school groups
  • Assisting with Zoofari Camp
  • Facilitating Craft Project Tables
  • Working Registration Tables
  • Assisting with Nature Areas/ Sensory Garden
  • Exhibit Interpretation Stations - Additional training required/ At least one rubric evaluation completed.
  • Biofact Tables - Additional training required/ At least one rubric evaluation completed.

Minimum Qualifications and Additional Requirements

Adult Volunteers are required to remain active in the program, on a yearly basis. If a volunteer fails to meet this requirement, they will be put on a one-year suspension and will have to re-apply for the program, the following year.
Adult Volunteers can apply for the program throughout the year in preparation for orientations and trainings that are held each February, May, August and November. Following the successful completion of the adult volunteer’s first six months, they will have the option to apply to join the docent program or may choose to remain in the adult volunteer program.
Adult Volunteer Trainings (trainings will occur over a one day – 8 hour time span) and will cover :

  • Customer Service
  • Codes and Safety
  • Volgistics
  • Proper use of Walkie
Exhibit Interpretation Training and Basic Interpretation Skills Training/ Biofact Training will be optional and occur separately, with the Educators.

Regular part-time employees who work 1,500 hours shall receive six (6) days of Sick Leave upon the completion of the 1,500 hours. If unused, this Sick Leave shall be allowed to accumulate to a maximum of fifteen (15) days (120 hours). Regular, full-time non-probationary employees who transfer to Regular, part-time positions will receive credit for the previous year's service for purposes of Sick Leave accrual and may carry over accrued Sick Leave accrual up to the maximum noted above.

Regular part-time employees who were in pay status (vacation, sick leave, or actual hours worked) for at least 1,500 hours during the year shall receive the following Vacation Leave:

Up to 10 years of service (40 hrs.) = 5 days per year
10 years or more (60 hrs.) = 7-1/2 days per year
