Duties

  • Working with the public to provide information, conduct permit compliance and safety inspections, and conduct river patrols.
  • Responding to emergency situations, including swift water rescue and administering first aid.
  • Preparing and maintaining recreation sites, monitoring condition of sites, natural and cultural resources.
  • Gathering and analyzing data related to recreation resources to recognize prominent trends.
  • Presenting a positive image of the BLM and conducting visitor contact in a courteous, professional, and friendly manner.
  • Developing interpretative programs and presenting interpretative information to the public.
  • Assists with managing Special Recreation Permits (SRPs), issuing permits, providing information, and assigning campsites.
  • Oversee fee collection activities, maintain fee accounting records, and submitting deposits.

Qualifications

Selective Placement Factors: This position requires a special qualification that has been determined to be essential to perform the duties and will be used as a screen out element. Those who do not provide evidence they possess the following selective factor(s) will be rated not qualified:
  • You must be able to possess a valid driver's license.
  • You MUST have skill and expertise to row safely a 15-16 foot raft in whitewater rapids. Be sure to include this information on your resume along with the river(s) you safely navigated the 15-16 foot raft AND the number of years. Failure to provide this information may result in you being found not qualified.
  • You must demonstrate knowledge of whitewater rescue techniques to include swift water swimming, recognition of swift water hazards, knowledge of shallow and deep water crossings, and rescue problems.

In addition to the selective placement factor requirements, to qualify at the GS-05 level you must meet one of the following:

Specialized Experience: Applicants must possess one (1) full year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-04 level that equipped you with the knowledge, skills, and ability to successfully perform the duties of a Park Ranger. Experience may have been in technical, administrative, or scientific work, fish and wildlife management, recreation management, law enforcement, or other park-related work. Examples of qualifying specialized experience include: working in as a park guide or tour leader; law enforcement or investigative work; archeological or historical preservation research work; forestry and/or fire management work in a park, recreation, or conservation area; management, assistant, or program specialist work involving the development and implementation of policy related to protection, conservation, or management of park areas or similar operations. Your experience must include navigating through Class III-V whitewater rapids.
OR Education: To qualify based on education you must have 4-year course study above high school leading to a bachelor's degree with 24 semester hours of related course work.
OR Combination of graduate education and experience: Applicants may also use an equivalent combination of the type and level of experience and education described above. Transcripts must be provided with your application packet.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Physical Demands: The work is performed mostly outdoors in rugged terrain; to include very steep, wet, muddy, rough, uneven or rocky surfaces. The position requires physical exertion such as, but not limited to, driving over unpaved roads, walking over rough terrain or inclines, standing for long periods of time, bending, crouching and stooping, digging, hiking, lifting, biking, stretching, reaching, or similar activities. Work may involve early morning hours, night hours, or daytime hours and may require working on holidays. It can require carrying heavy backpacks, tools, rescue equipment, or other loads.

Work Environment: Most work will be performed outdoors, in all types of weather conditions, terrain, and elevations. Work may take place in an extremely remote environment and may require primitive camping and living skills for upwards of two weeks in duration. Indoor duties are performed in a normal office setting.
