Duties

MAJOR DUTIES: Performs heavy custodial duties at duty stations, visitor sites, and office buildings. Duties include sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, scrubbing floors and walls, emptying trash cans, cleaning the restroom facilities (which include cleaning up bodily fluids/waste), and carrying and walking with heavy trash bags ups to 50-60 pounds from one location to another. Operates park trucks, up to one ton, on a recurring basis for trash and recycling materials removal, grounds-keeping duties and for moving equipment and furniture. Performs semi-skilled and unskilled minor maintenance and repair work on building, structures and equipment. Must be able to make repairs on faucets, sinks, toilets and associated plumbing. Paints, stains and refinishes furnishings. Responsible for trash and recycling barrels and keeps access sites and grounds around building clean and free of trash and debris.

Area Information: Located in the Pocono Mountains, just 80 miles west of New York City and 100 miles north of Philadelphia, the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area attracts over 5-million visitors each year. The 70,000-acre park also includes the Middle Delaware National Scenic and Recreation Area and 26 miles of the Appalachian National Scenic Trail. Nearby towns of Stroudsburg, PA, Port Jervis, NY, and Newton, NJ provide all services, including medical services and other community needs. Additionally, several smaller communities are adjacent to the park. Summers and winters are generally mild with average summer temperatures about 80 degrees, with some humidity, and average winter temperatures about 30 degrees.   • U.S. Citizenship required.
  • Appointment subject to background investigation and favorable adjudication.
  • Meet Selective Service Registration Act requirement for males.
  • Selectee will be required to participate in the Direct Deposit Electronics Funds Transfer Program.
  • You will be required to operate a government (or private) motor vehicle as part of your official duties; a valid driver's license is required. You will be required to submit a Motor Vehicle Operator's License and Driving Record. You may also be required to submit (within a State sealed envelope or submitted directly by the State authorities), and at your own expense, all certified driving records from all States that disclose all valid driver's licenses, whether current or past, possessed by you.
  • You will be required to wear a uniform and comply with the National Park Service uniform standards. A uniform allowance will be provided.
  • You may be required to work on weekends and holidays. Occasional overtime with be required.
  • Pre-employment physical is required.
  • Applicants must be at least 18 years old due to the hazardous work (i.e. driving a motor vehicle, etc.)

Qualifications

Applicants must meet the qualification requirements as specified in the X-118-C, Job Qualification System for Trades and Labor Occupations, 4749 Series. There is no specific length of training or experience required; however, the applicant must be able to demonstrate through experience shown in the resume materials that they possess the skill level that has equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities to successfully perform the duties of a Maintenance Worker without more than normal supervision.

Non-Competitive Rehire Eligibility: Temporary seasonal employees can only maintain their non-competitive rehire eligibility if they work no more than a combined total of Temporary NTE less than 1040 hours anywhere in the National Park Service (NPS) within their established service year. Accordingly, non-competitive rehire eligibility allows for re-appointment to the same position or another position appropriate for temporary appointment with the same qualification requirements (5 CFR 316.402[b][7]), based on series and grade, anywhere in the major subdivision (NPS).

If you have held a temporary seasonal appointment in the past 12 months and have already worked the maximum temporary appointment less than 1040 hours during that period, you are still welcome to apply. However, please be aware that exceeding the limit of 1040 hours in your established service year will result in the loss of your non-competitive rehire eligibility.

The limit can be exceeded by working multiple temporary seasonal positions that result in a combined total greater than 1040 hours. The limit also can be exceeded by working a single temporary seasonal appointment that exceeds 1040 hours, unless granted an exception by OPM.

Employment may be terminated at any time due to fluctuations in funding levels, project needs, employee performance, or other considerations.

Physical Demands: May work from ladders, scaffolds and platforms and where surfaces to be coated, or the parts of the systems worked on are hard to reach that require incumbent to stand, stoop, bend, kneel, climb and work in tiring and uncomfortable positions. Frequently lifts, carries and sets up parts and equipment that weigh up to 50 pounds

Working Conditions: Will be exposed to weather and temperature extremes while working outdoors, under all weather conditions. Will be exposed to biting insects, poison ivy, dirt, dust, grease, solvents, paints, and bad smelling fumes; noise from equipment and power tools.

Travel, transportation, and relocation expenses will not be paid. All travel, transportation, and relocation expenses associated with reporting for duty in this position will be the sole responsibility of the selected employee.
