Job Description

Do you want to conduct administrative and civil investigations, including fraud investigations, for the State of Utah? The Department of Commerce is looking for an organized, level headed, hard-working, analytical professional to fill a vacant Consumer Protection Investigator position.

  • Telework is NOT available for this position but may be available in the future. $22.00/hour is the anticipated offer amount for the successful applicant (subject to DHRM Promotion/transfer rules).

PRINCIPAL DUTIES
In this position you will investigate alleged violations of law, initiate legal actions, and encourage compliance with consumer protection laws. You will effectively track multiple investigations and stay organized in an information-rich and document-heavy environment. You will perform a significant amount of writing and succeed by identifying key facts and writing clearly and concisely. Duties will include, but are not limited to the following:
  • Interacting constantly with consumers, businesses, attorneys, and other government agencies.
  • Using a wide variety of tools to perform research and investigate alleged violations of the law.
  • Performing a full range of investigative work including conducting interviews, determining an investigative plan, obtaining and compiling evidence, drafting legal documents, and thoroughly documenting the investigative process.
  • Ensuring compliance with state statutes and rules.
  • Facilitating resolutions of consumer complaints.
  • Initiating legal action and negotiating settlement agreements.
  • Responding to phone calls and emails quickly and effectively.
  • Educating businesses and the public on consumer protection laws.
  • Maintaining detailed records, preparing reports, and drafting legal documents.
  • Representing the Division in administrative hearings.
  • Tactfully and calmly handle conflict on a regular basis.

  • Bachelor's degree or higher.
  • Experience in investigating or analyzing and applying laws.

  • Work requires some physical exertion such as long periods of standing, walking over rough terrain or rocky surfaces; recurring bending, crouching, stooping, stretching, reaching, lifting moderately heavy items (up to 50 lbs.) or similar activities.
