Full Description

Manage all NSB museum collections, supervise museum staff, act as building manager, participate in writing of grant proposals and administer resulting projects, and participate in both short and long-term planning for museum exhibits and educational programs. This position provides management oversight and curatorial services for the Simon Paneak Memorial Museum and the Inupiat Heritage Center.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Oversee the arrangement, cataloguing, exhibition, and maintenance of all borough collections.
Provide leadership and training through specialized knowledge of the discipline of the museum.
Research and identify available funding opportunities from public and private sources, participate in writing proposals and administer resulting projects.
Participate in develop and oversee short-term and long-term planning of borough museums, leading to museum accreditation.
Manage and administer museum related policies and funding activities.
Plan, organize, staff, supervise, evaluate and coordinate museum activities, employees, and the gift shop.
Responsible for professional practices, including acquisition, preservation, research, interpretation and presentation.
Arrange and interpret collections and displays for the general public, as needed.
Conduct research with elders to oversee the development of interpretative and/or educational materials for the community and schools.
Develop programs to enhance historical and cultural awareness in both museums.
Perform ensure accurate record keeping and oversee management of all borough collections, as needed.
Act as building manager and conduct light building maintenance, as needed.
Prepare reports, monitor expenditures and assist with budget preparations.
Keep current on museum issues through attendance at professional seminars and workshops.
Contact other museums regarding collections and artifact loans.
Respond to the public in a professional and courteous manner.
Maintain a working relationship with the state and other borough departments and consultants that are assigned to the department.
Supervise and evaluate staff.
Perform other duties as assigned.


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Knowledge of NSB organization, operations, policies and procedures.
Knowledge of standard museum operations.
Skill in using personal computers and a variety of software applications including museum specific software.
Ability to work with the public.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relations with co-workers, and other borough and community personnel.

Education, Experience, Certifications and Licenses Required:

Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in anthropology or museum studies or equivalent of 12 years work experience in museums;
Two years of work experience in a museum, including training under professional museum staff;
Two years of work experience with a PC using common software applications.
