Full Description

This is entry-level professional work in the Childcare Facility Inspector series. Work involves the planning, implementing, monitoring, and inspecting of childcare facilities and programs within assigned counties. The incumbent inspects childcare facilities, such as center-based childcare facilities, home-based childcare facilities, youth camps, and children residential homes. Incumbents also inspect food-handling areas within the facilities; interpret and enforce childcare laws, rules, and regulations; enforce applicable environmental regulations; conduct surveys; collect specimens as necessary for laboratory analysis as well as conduct technical assistance visits to regulated facilities. General supervision is received from a higher-level childcare facility inspector or supervisor.

Examples of Work:
Examples of work performed in this classification include, but are not limited to, the following:
Inspects childcare facilities, such as center based childcare facilities, home-based childcare facilities, youth camps, and children residential homes.

Inspects food-handling areas within facilities, private wells, and water supplies as well as other facilities to ensure compliance with the agency's childcare licensing regulations and environmental health regulations.

Responds to childcare related complaints.

Issues and assists in suspending and reinstating registration licenses and permits.

Collects food, water, and other specimens for laboratory analysis as necessary.

Investigates food-borne disease outbreaks to determine cause of illnesses.

Recalls and disposes of potentially hazardous food or other items within childcare facilities.

Conducts training programs for childcare facilities, teaches improved childcare practices to include food handling, and teaches improved environmental sanitation techniques.

Consults with county, city, and other public officials regarding childcare licensing laws.

Performs related or similar duties as required or assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:
These minimum qualifications have been agreed upon by Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) in this job class and are based upon a job analysis and the essential functions. Any request to substitute related education or experience for minimum qualifications must be addressed to the Mississippi State Personnel Board in writing, identifying the related education and experiences which demonstrated the candidate's ability to perform all essential functions of the position.
EXPERIENCE/EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
Education:
A Bachelor's Degree from an accredited four-year college or university with a total of sixteen (16) semester hours directly related to Early Childhood Development and Care courses.

Essential Functions:
Additional essential functions may be identified and included by the hiring agency. The essential functions include, but are not limited to, the following:
Performs routine required inspections of center-based childcare centers, home-based childcare facilities, youth camps, and children residential homes.

Recalls and disposes of potentially hazardous food or other items within childcare facilities.

Implements various special programs related to childcare facilities at the county level and enforce all applicable regulations.
