Who we are: The West Virginia Legislative Claims Commission is a division of the West Virginia Legislature’s Joint Committee of Government and Finance. The Legislative Claims Commission is a legislative agency that hears claims filed against state agencies. It also administers the West Virginia Crime Victims Compensation Fund, which provides financial assistance to qualified victims of criminally injurious conduct.

Position: Claims Investigator for the West Virginia Crime Victim Compensation Fund

Summary of Position: The Claims Investigator will further the mission of the Crime Victim Compensation Fund by investigating applications for benefits filed under the West Virginia Crime Victims Compensation Act. The Claims Investigator will work under the supervision of the Program & Outreach Coordinator and the Clerk of the Legislative Claims Commission.

The Claims Investigator will review applications for benefits to determine eligibility for victim compensation awards, request appropriate reports and documentation from law enforcement agencies, courts, medical providers, employers, and other providers to process claims; compile and review documents to determine the eligibility of an applicant and the amount of an award, if qualified. The Claims Investigator will also assist the claimant as necessary in submitting the required reports and documents to complete the claim file and assure that the appropriate records are filed in order for the Claim Investigator to prepare the written reports and evaluations of each new claim as well as provide continuing evaluations of ongoing claims. These reports include the recommendations of the Claim Investigator as to each claimant’s eligibility and qualifications for benefits to be paid out by the Fund as provided for in the Crime Victims Compensation Act. The Claims Investigator will prepare each claim file for final review and approval by a Commissioner and also assist the Attorney General’s Office in appeal hearings. The Claims Investigator will have the opportunity to engage in various educational and outreach efforts of the Fund throughout the State, establish relationships within the law enforcement and victim services communities to assist victims, work with a variety of community based groups to promote the mission of the Fund and other duties as needed.

Qualifications: Candidates for this position must have a college degree with strong public speaking and writing skills. Candidates should also have excellent computer skills. Attention to detail, the ability to understand and present information clearly and the ability to meet deadlines are also necessary skills.
