The Zero Waste Specialist position is part of Phoenix’s Zero Waste team. The Zero Waste program works with residents, businesses, institutions and City agencies to promote source reduction, reuse, recycling and composting throughout Phoenix to reduce the amount of material that is landfilled and find alternative diversion solutions to our evolving waste stream. The position will report to the Zero Waste Coordinator and work in the areas of waste prevention, recycling education, and has day-to-day decision-making responsibilities for projects.

The primary responsibilities that will be performed by the Zero Waste Specialist include, solid waste education to City of Phoenix departments, residents and public-private partners; Material Recovery Facility (MRF) tours; procurement of team equipment and supplies; inventory work, logging information received from telephone and email correspondence; compiling and drafting reports for a variety of constituents; handling inquiries from public officials, outside agencies, and businesses; data compilation of trainings, public speaking engagements and presentations, and city building recycling initiatives; providing technical information and compiling statistics for use in management reports; coordinating activities and events with other city departments and outside agencies to ensure continued service to both residents and city employees; demonstrating superior customer service, integrity, and commitment to innovation, efficiency, and teamwork; analyzing operational processes; providing zero waste knowledge and developing advanced solutions to better serve our residents and meet the departments strategic goals.

This recruitment and any interview process as a result of this recruitment may be used by multiple hiring managers and multiple departments throughout the City to fill any related current or future vacancies; other recruitments and appropriate eligible lists may also be considered.

SALARY

$16.24 (minimum) - $23.70 (maximum) hourly / $33,779 - $49,296 annually. Candidates may be hired up to $49,296 depending upon qualifications.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Two years of responsible clerical work experience which provides the ability to maintain a variety of financial and related records, perform basic mathematical computations, operate base radios or telephone switchboard equipment, order and dispense supplies and materials, and deal with the public; OR

  • Two years of complex clerical experience in recycling, zero waste, or similar field.

  • An equivalent combination of related experience and education may be considered.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS – The minimum qualifications listed above, plus:

  • One year of experience in educating, planning, coordinating, implementing and evaluating environmental programs related to Recycling or Zero Waste.

  • Marketing and project coordination experience.

  • Bachelor’s degree in public administration, business administration, sustainability or a close related field.

  • Experience implementing recycling or other environmental programs within a public organization.

  • Experience in community outreach and engagement programs.

  • Ability to work more than forty hours in a workweek to perform assigned job duties, including weekends, evenings, early morning hours and holidays as required.

  • Ability to work independently and in a team.

  • Experience working with Microsoft Excel, Word, Publisher and Outlook.

  • Fluency in Spanish.
