Duties

Summary

A selectee receiving a first appointment to the Federal Government (Civil Service) is entitled only to the lowest step of the grade for which selected. The display of a salary range on this vacancy shall not be construed as granting an entitlement to a higher rate of pay.

Responsibilities

The animal packer is responsible for preparing, securing, and packing loads of varying sizes, shapes, and weights using hitches appropriate to the task at hand, feeding, medical treatment (including administering subcutaneous and intramuscular injections), the general care of livestock and livestock facilities, the use of heavy equipment to clean corrals, the care and maintenance of all tack equipment, and transporting mules via trailer both in and out of Grand Canyon National Park. Animal Packers will also at times be required to assume crew leader responsibilities for inner-canyon trail crews during the absence of the regular crew leader.

The incumbent is responsible for assisting packer in using livestock to pack supplies throughout Grand Canyon National Park, caring, feeding, and providing basic veterinary care for livestock, assisting trail crew leaders by providing transport of groceries and equipment to inner-canyon bunkhouses and spike camps, cleaning, repairing and maintaining saddles and associated tack, and maintaining a high degree of safety ( for livestock, visitors, workers, and self) in the performance of these duties. In addition, incumbent will be required to perform trail construction and repair as necessary. This includes operating all trail-related hand and power tools, making trail improvements, and implementing safety protocols.

Prior to your first official motor vehicle operation, and again every year thereafter (or more frequently if management determines such need exists), you will be required to sign an affidavit certifying to your possession of a valid State issued driver's license that is current and has not been revoked, suspended, canceled, or otherwise disqualified in any way to prohibit your operation of a motor vehicle. You will also submit a photocopy of your valid State issued driver's license prior to your first official motor vehicle operation, and again every year, or more frequently if management determines such need exists. Lastly, you may be required to submit (within a State sealed envelope or submitted directly by the State authorities), and at your own expense, all certified driving records from all States that discloses all valid driver's licenses, whether current or past, possessed by you. Please indicate in your application whether you possess a valid State driver's license.
    • You will be required to wear a uniform and comply with the National Park Service uniform standards. A uniform allowance will be provided.
    • You may be required to work weekends and holidays.
    • If you are a new employee or supervisor in the Federal government, you will be required to complete a one-year probationary period.

    • Applicants must be at least (1)18 years old or (2) at least 16 years old and: (a) Have graduated from high school or been awarded a certificate equivalent to graduating from high school; or (b) Have completed a formal vocational training program; or (c) Have received a statement from school authorities agreeing with their preference for employment rather than continuing their education; or (d) Be currently enrolled in a secondary school and either work only during school vacation periods or work part-time during the school year under a formal student employment program.

    A Relocation Incentive May Be Authorized for a Federal employee when the employee must move, as directed by the National Park Service (NPS) either through a management directed reassignment or selection for employment, to a different location at least 50 miles away from the one where his/her position of record held at time of selection is currently located, due to a need of the NPS. A relocation incentive is not the same as a Permanent Change of Station (PCS) move and, as such, may be granted in conjunction with one another.

    Physical Demands: Incumbent must have the physical ability to perform tasks which require handling heavy objects (75 lbs.) of various weights, sizes and shapes. Incumbent must be physically fit and able to ride livestock for long periods of time (up to six hours); may also be required to hike long distances (10 miles or more) in varying terrain and extreme weather conditions while carrying heavy packs and tools.

    Working Conditions: Incumbent will be exposed to dust, steep narrow trails, noise, and congested areas. Weather and temperature conditions vary greatly, ranging from 120 degrees in the summer months, to 0 degree temperatures in the winter. Animal Packers will also be exposed to rough terrain and large elevation changes (2200 ft. to 8,000 ft.).
