Job Description

With over 190,000 small businesses in the City and an ever-growing number of businesses of all sizes, it is imperative that the unit enhances its capacity for creating meaningful connections, developing more partnerships, and expanding its outreach capabilities. As such, the unit would greatly benefit from the support of a part-time staff person to help advance these engagement initiatives.
Responsibilities include:
  • Identify opportunities for new partnerships, specifically with small businesses, and conduct proactive, targeted outreach
  • Conduct emergency preparedness presentations and fairs for businesses
  • Coordinate events including tabletop exercises, webinars, workshops, and networking events for private sector partners
  • Maintain the Partner Portal database by ensuring functionality, liaising with partners to troubleshoot issues, and developing additional resources for partners
  • Support the continued development of the Partners in Preparedness program
  • Support the Partners in Preparedness program through marketing, direct contact with partners, event planning, and outreach initiatives
  • Support the continued growth and enhancement of the John D. Solomon Fellowship
  • Support the Strategic Partnerships Unit in unit-wide activities
  • Support the External Affairs Bureau in agency-wide projects
  • Support the agency’s planning efforts for incidents affecting the private sector
  • Work on special projects as needed.

The selected candidate will be assigned to periodic Emergency Operations Center team and will be expected to work non-business hours during emergencies. The selected candidate will also participate in drills and exercises, assist with Ready NY presentations to external groups, and will undertake special projects as assigned.

Minimum Qual Requirements

1. A master’s degree from an accredited college in emergency management, public administration, urban planning, engineering, economics, political science, the physical sciences or related field and one year of satisfactory full-time professional experience in one or a combination of the following: emergency management, fire, police, or military service, public safety, public health, public administration, urban planning, engineering, or another specialized area to which the appointment is to be made; or
2. A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college and two years of satisfactory full-time professional experience in the areas listed in “1” above; or
3. A four-year high school diploma or its educational equivalent approved by a state’s
department of education or a recognized accrediting organization and six years of satisfactory full-time professional experience in the areas listed in “1” above, at least two years of which must have been in one of those areas, or another specialized area to which the appointment is to be made.

Preferred Skills

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, Access, and PowerPoint)
  • Strong public speaking skills
  • Ability to work well under pressure

NYC EM is responsible for coordinating citywide emergency planning and response for all types and scales of emergencies. The Strategic Partnerships Unit supports the resiliency of the City’s private sector through information sharing, partnership building, training and education; facilitates the integration of private sector concerns into New York City’s emergency planning, preparedness, response and recovery activities; and coordinates with businesses of all types and sizes to create a culture of preparedness that extends beyond the workplace.
