DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:
The Crime Analysis Data Technician is an entry-level class, which serves as support to the sworn functions of the police programs, requiring no prior related work experience. Incumbents in the position are trained in their specific assignments as well as general policies and procedures, by high-level civilian or sworn officer staff and other personnel as necessary.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED/EXERCISED:
General supervision is provided by high level civilian personnel or sworn personnel at the rank of Sergeant or above. Work may be reviewed both during performance and upon completion.
WORK SCHEDULE:
This position may work a varied shift which may include nights, weekends and holidays. This position is eligible for overtime pay.
Include but are not limited to the following:
- Uses general and specialized computer applications in order to gather and organize crime data.
- Organizes, interprets, and summarizes crime reports and statistics on criminal activity in order to identity existing crime series and patterns.
- Compiles and provides statistical and narrative data relating to crime and traffic accidents.
- Schedules, conducts and trains personnel on methods of data collection.
- Determines linking factors in criminal activity, such as method, crime type, suspect descriptions and weapons used.
- Writes reports and gives oral presentations to sworn staff on crime series and patterns.
- Attends regional meetings of crime analysis professionals in order to share information on crime patterns, new methodologies, and developing tools.
- Responds to requests for information.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Education and/or Experience:
Any combination of education and experience that has provided the knowledge, skills and abilities necessary for a Crime Analysis Data Technician. A typical way of obtaining the required qualifications is to possess a high school diploma, or equivalent, including coursework or work experience in crime analysis and mapping software. No felony convictions or disqualifying criminal history.
License/Certificate:
Possession of a valid class "C" California driver's license.
Possession of a Crime and Intelligence Analysis Certificate is highly desirable.
The selected candidate must pass a thorough background investigation.
UNION MEMBERSHIP: Regular full-time and part-time positions in this classification are represented by the Service Employees International Union (SEIU).

NOTE: For most positions, the City of Oxnard relies on office automation (Microsoft Office) and web-based enabled tools, therefore candidates must be proficient and comfortable with computer use to perform functions associated with on-going work.
Regular and reliable attendance, effective communication skills, and development of effective working relationships are requirements of all positions.
City staff may be required to play an active role in the event of an emergency, which may include changes in responsibilities and working hours.
This position requires a 12 month probationary period.
