About Aqqaluk Trust

Aqqaluk Trust is a 501 (c)3 non-profit private foundation. The Aqqaluk Trust was founded in 1989 in honor of Robert Aqqaluk Newlin, Sr., one of the great Iñupiat leaders. The foundation first provided scholarship funding for eligible applicants seeking training or pursuing their secondary education.

Since its inception, Aqqaluk Trust has grown and now provides more Iñupiaq language and cultural resources. Aqqaluk Trust currently focuses on three major areas related to the language, culture, and education of the Iñupiat people of northwest Alaska.

Summary

This position supervises campers and provides assistance with all other programs.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Ensure compliance with COVID-19 best practices and precautionary steps are in alignment with our 2021 Camp Sivu mitigation plan.

Assists with providing camp activities and chores such as, serving food, cleaning dining room and kitchen, fish cutting, hauling, and cutting firewood, hauling water, and helping children maintain good personal hygiene.

Plans, leads, and implements camp courses and activities to teach Inupiaq skills and traditional knowledge for campers.

May substitute for an instructor and teach classes.

Knows, enforces, and follows all safety guidelines associated with the camp program, including knowing the whereabouts of the 8-11 campers at all times for the duration of the camp.

Sleep in a tent with campers.

Stay with different groups during all rotations.

Accompany campers on travel days.

Other related duties may also be assigned.

Qualifications

High school diploma or GED equivalent.

Must have proof of COVID-19 Vaccination.

Must be able to reside at the Camp.

Ability to work at a remote setting

Ability to work long hours

Ability to perform a variety of tasks outside in various climates

Ability to work with children of all ages

Communication skills

Enjoys being in the company of children

Teamwork

Highly self-motivated

Inupiaq fluency preferred.

Good physical condition

Positive role model

Working Conditions and Physical Requirements

Weather: Indoor/Outdoor. Frequently exposed to arctic conditions.

Noise level: Moderate to Loud

Description of environment: This is a setting located in a remote camp.

Physical requirements: Must be able to lift and/or move up to 50 lbs. Must constantly be able to stand, walk, climb, push, pull use hands and arms, stoop, kneel and crouch.

Travel: Employee may travel up to 50% to various locations within the U.S. and/or remote locations and may be required to use alternative modes of transportation, including but not limited to snow machines, boats, small airplanes, and ATVs. Travel is coordinated by Aqqaluk Trust.
