Summary

About the Position: The U. S. Army Corps of Engineers' Vicksburg District is one of 41 Army Corps districts worldwide and one of six districts in the Corps' Mississippi Valley Division (MVD). The Vicksburg District provides services to develop and manage the Nation's water resources needs in an environmentally sustainable manner. We provide flood control, water supply, navigation, emergency operations, environmental restoration, hydropower and water quality for over 68,000 square miles.


Responsibilities

  • Prepares Phase 1 Environmental Site Assessments in support of work related to identifying hazardous, toxic, and radioactive waste.
  • Assures that water resources projects are in compliance with all environmental laws and regulations.
  • Works within the boundaries of the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA), Endangered Species Act (ESA), Marine Mammal Protection Act, Fish and Wildlife coordination Act (FWCA), Clean Air Act, and Clean Water Act.
  • Reviews biological components of environmental documents for technical accuracy.
  • Serves as environmental coordinator in multi-disciplinary planning efforts on numerous complex projects involving significant biological and ecological plan formulation problems.

    Basic Requirement for Biologist Position:

    A. Degree: Bachelor's degree (or higher degree) in biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to the position.
    OR
    B. Combination of Education and Experience: Courses equivalent to a major, as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

    In addition to meeting the basic requirement above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualification requirements listed below:

    Specialized Experience GS-12:
    One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-11 grade level in the Federal service which includes; (1) conducting biological studies to determine the environmental effects of federal projects; and (2) preparing biological assessments in compliance with the Endangered Species Act and conducting extensive coordination with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service; and (3) under purview of the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA), preparing environmental assessments and/or environmental impact statements and coordinating them with agencies and the public.

    Time in Grade Requirement:
    Time-In-Grade requirement must be met by the closing date of this announcement. Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) Position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade GS-11 (or equivalent). With regards to time-in-grade validation, if you held a position other than a GS pay plan, be sure your resume includes the pay plan and the salary you earned during the assignment. Without this information, your time-in-grade validation may not be able to be verified and will result in your not meeting the time-grade requirement for this vacancy.
