Overview:
Under the general supervision of the Patient Access Leader, this position collaborates with patients who have, or potentially have, high liabilities, and assists them with identifying possible alternate funding sources, arranges acceptable payment arrangements, or supports them through the financial assistance process. Ensures compliance with credit and collections policies in order to minimize the financial impact to the organization and the patient. Informs patients of their rights and the Northwestern/nThrive financial policies. Meets department staffing needs which may include weekends and holidays.
Responsibilities:
  • Provides excellent service to all customers by responding to customer requests/ issues in a proactive and timely manner.
  • Explains financial policies and patient obligations.
  • Assists with financial assistance application processes.
  • Refers patients to Eligibility Team for Medicaid applications.
  • Calculates patient liabilities and requests monies due from the patient, including balances from previous and current visits.
  • Interviews patients to determine their ability to pay and to collect payment prior to service by contacting patients both within the hospital and over the phone.
  • Schedules appointments to meet with patients and their family members to discuss their financial alternatives.
  • Establishes payment arrangements for patients’ deductible / co-payment / past-due amounts.
  • Researches other open unresolved accounts associated with patients.
  • Documents notes in computer system regarding all conversations with patients, insurance company representatives, and pre-certification notification representatives, as well as results of collection efforts.
  • Exchanges necessary information with the physician offices, hospital, nursing homes, and other departments.
  • Prepares oral/ written communications including periodic status reports.
  • Handles telephone calls and walk ins or directing patients to appropriate area.
  • Performs other related clerical duties.
  • Participates in departmental performance improvement initiatives.
  • Performs other duties assigned by leader.
  • Supports nThrive’s Compliance Program by adhering to policies and procedures pertaining to HIPAA, FDCPA, FCRA, and other laws applicable to nThrive’s business practices. This includes: becoming familiar with nThrive’s Code of Ethics, attending training as required, notifying management or nThrive’s Helpline when there is a compliance concern or incident, HIPAA-compliant handling of patient information, and demonstrable awareness of confidentiality obligations.
Qualifications:
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • 1 year of experience registering / billing in a hospital or physician office setting or insurance claims processing preferred, including demonstrated success obtaining patient demographic and financial information and handling insurance verification.
  • Ability to perform arithmetic calculations.
  • Experience communicating effectively with a customer and simplifying complex information.
  • Ability to navigate Internet Explorer and Microsoft Office.
  • Experience working in a role that requires prioritization of multiple critical priorities while ensuring quality and achievement of performance metrics.
  • Demonstrated ability to meet or exceed performance metrics.
  • Ability to handle sensitive information and maintain HIPAA compliance
  • Ability to handle, diffuse, and resolve difficult situations, including customer complaints.
Preferred Skills:
  • At least 1 year of experience working in a role within a customer-facing, fast paced environment with high volume of either calls or in-person requests.
  • Knowledge of commercial and government insurance plans, payer networks, government resources, and medical terminology.
  • Bilingual ability a plus.
