The business area serves selected weather-dependent customers to whom accurate, real-time, uninterrupted, and reliable weather data is essential to run efficient operations.

Position Description:

Accurate lightning detection information is extremely valuable to applications in the electric power industry, airports, insurance validation, and wildfire management, among others. Vaisala has an ongoing research study to validate the performance of its lightning detection systems and improve algorithms. In this summer project, the student will assist in taking high fidelity observations of lightning events to improve lightning type classification and continuing current identification. In particular, the work will involve time-stamped video observations. Assistance with other equipment to measure electric field changes may also be required. The project may also include multiple trips into the field to deploy, test, and monitor the measurement equipment. This internship will give the student valuable experience working on an important validation study in a commercial environment.


Key responsibilities include:

The goals of the internship are to assist senior scientists in the lab and in the field to collect valuable event data on lightning characteristics. We particularly seek assistance with setting up, testing, and deploying a time-stamped and triggered moderate-speed video acquisition system to include:

  • moderate-frame rate camera (on the of order 1000 fps)
  • GPS receiver to time-stamp all video frames
  • triggering mechanism based on either or both of (1) a local-area lightning sensor or (2) manual triggering; objective is to record only brief periods of interest (lightning in the area)
  • pre-trigger interval on the order of 0.5-1 second

Qualifications:

  • Senior undergraduate student through MS-level candidate encouraged to apply
  • Major in Electrical Engineering or Computer Science preferred
  • Practical laboratory experience and familiarity with hardware engineering best practices
  • Familiarity with photography / video and GPS desired

ANTICIPATED SALARY RANGE: $20-25 per hour. (Salary is determined by the education, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities of the applicant, internal equity, and alignment with market data). This is a 10-week, temporary position and is not eligible for employment benefits.
