Summary

This position is located in North Fork, ID on the Salmon-Challis National Forest.

This is a Seasonal position with a minimum of 18 pay periods are guaranteed full-time employment with the remaining pay periods (8) being in non-pay status.

Performs a variety of work in support of the unit wilderness/recreation program.

Responsibilities

  • Duties listed are at the full performance level.
  • Responsible for developing and carrying out operating plans for wilderness maintenance, rehabilitation, reconstruction, and construction projects based on approved direction in land management plans.
  • Implements wilderness, and/or trail and bridge construction and reconstruction projects.
  • Participates in the identification and planning for future trail construction, reconstruction, maintenance, and restoration projects
  • Trains crews in wilderness and trails construction and revegetation techniques.
  • Initiates public contacts in the field to enhance the user's wilderness experience and protect the wilderness resource through dispersal of information.
  • Serves as a Forest Protection Officer (FPO). Issues notices of field violations when violations of regulations are encountered. Conducts investigations, collects evidence and prepares case reports on violations.
  • Responsible for maintenance and care of assigned pack and saddle stock and for operation and maintenance of specialized equipment used in transport of livestock.

    Qualifications

    Specialized Experience Requirement:

    For the GS-06: Applicants must have one year specialized experience equivalent to the GS-05. Specialized experience is defined below and applicants must meet 2 out of 5 of the following:

    1) Assisted in planning and implementing the logistics of wilderness projects associated with trail maintenance and reconstruction projects; 2) Patrolled wilderness to ensure that areas are operated, used, and maintained in accordance with wilderness management plans; 3) Maintained visitors use records and prepared visitors use information for data processing, conducted education programs addressing Leave No Trace camping, wilderness philosophy and minimal stock impacts; 4) Load and transport livestock in trailers to remote trailheads safely; 5) Skilled in minimum impact camping with stock such as in the use of high lines, electric fence, hobbles.

    For the GS-7: Applicants must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level (GS-6). Examples of specialized experience are listed below and applicants must meet 3 of 6 of the following:

    1) Planned and implemented logistics required for completion of wilderness projects, such as trail maintenance and reconstruction projects, habitat restoration projects, and invasive plant surveys; 2) Patrolled trails to ensure areas were operated, used, and maintained in accordance with trail management plans; 3) Conducted trail maintenance surveys and documented trail work needs in data management systems; 4) Served as a forest protection officer or similar type position which includes conducting investigations, collecting evidence and preparing case reports on violations; 5) Maintained and cared for assigned pack and saddle stock and for operation and maintenance of specialized equipment used in transport of livestock; 6) Skilled in minimum impact camping with stock such as in the use of high lines, electric fence, hobbles. OR meet 1 of 6 in combination with one full year of graduate education.

    Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

    TIME IN GRADE REQUIREMENT: If you are a current federal employee in the General Schedule (GS) pay plan and applying for a promotion opportunity, you must meet time-in-grade (TIG) requirements of 52 weeks of service at the next lower grade level in the normal line of progression for the position being filled. This requirement must be met by the closing date of this announcement.
