Duties

Summary

This position is located within a National Forest. The primary purpose of this position is to perform work of materials handling on a Forest Unit. The position involves work in receiving, storing, and shipping a variety of supplies, equipment and materials. Duties also include packing and repacking a variety of stock items.

Responsibilities

  • Receives, marks, and stores a variety of bin and bulk supplies, materials, equipment and commodities.
  • Inspects incoming shipments for quantity, and quality; sorts and segregates material for storage.
  • Loads, unloads, stacks, bins, rotates, and marks stock in accordance with standardized operating instructions.
  • Completes forms relating to stock description, quantity, unit of issue, and labeling requirements for incoming and outgoing materials, equipment, and commodities.
  • Checks shipping documents to verify incoming and outgoing shipments.
  • Identifies obvious damage to equipment and materials through visual inspection. Reports discrepancies and damage to the supervisor or higher grade employee.
  • Uses hardcopy or automated material identification equipment such as bar code wands, computer terminals, and laser scanners to select storage location. Stocks, moves, rotates, and arranges warehouse items.
  • Reviews approved requisition documents. Determines stock locations and makes selections for shipment or distribution by quantity and stock number. Prepares materials for orders and packs for delivery. Obtains signatures to acknowledge delivery.
  • Uses common hand tools including hammers, screwdrivers and/or pliers, as well as strapping tools, and stapling and banding machines.
  • Operates hand trucks, hand lifts, pallet jacks, dollies, and/or electric jack lifts.
  • May use warehouse tractors, tugs and/or forklifts, and general purpose vehicles under close supervision or in developmental capacity.
  • Adheres to all safety regulations, security of the materials in storage, and safeguarding the keys to storage areas.
  • May use computerized equipment to compile, input and reconcile information.

    PLEASE NOTE: This vacancy is being used to fill positions for FY2021 Temporary Employment Hiring season.

    This position is temporary, has a Not-to-Exceed date and will be filled for up to 6 months or as a not to exceed (NTE) 1 year, however an extension of the appointment may be possible without further competition. The appointment may also end early due to lack of work or lack of funds.

    The duty station for this position will be at one of the duty locations listed in this announcement. Salary range as shown is the locality pay Rest of U.S. (RUS). Pay rates vary by location. Please visit the Office of Personnel Management's website for additional information on pay rates.

    The USDA Forest Service has legislative authority to recruit and fill Permanent (Career/Career-Conditional), Temporary, and Term Appointments under the USDA Demonstration Project. Under this authority, any U.S. citizen may apply.
