Summary

THIS IS A NATIONAL GUARD TITLE 5 EXCEPTED SERVICE POSITION.

This National Guard position is for a LEGAL ASSISTANT, Position Description Number T5609000 and is part of the ID JOINT FORCES HEADQUARTERS ARMY, National Guard.

THIS IS A TEMPORARY INTERNSHIP- NOT TO EXCEED 120 DAYS. MAY CONVERT TO A PERMANENT STATUS WITHOUT FURTHER COMPETITION IF POSITION BECOMES AVAILABLE.

THIS POSITION IS OPEN TO THE PUBLIC. MILITARY MEMBERSHIP IS NOT REQUIRED.


Responsibilities

This position is located in Army National Guard (ARNG); JFHQ-State, Office of the Staff Judge Advocate (SJA)

This is an intern position. The Idaho National Guard (IDNG) JAG Corps interns work as temporary civil service employees performing a variety of legal assignments. Inters get first-hand experience of what life in the IDNG JAG Corps is like. Interns are fully integrated into the IDNG Office of the Staff Judge Advocate and are valued members of the team. Inters work under attorney supervision in virtually every practice area of the JAG Corps. Specifically, inters will conduct legal research, write briefs and opinions, assist with legislative affairs, participate in investigations, assist with administrative law, and provide client services to service members, dependents and retirees. Inters will receive constant guidance and mentorship form Judge Advocates. Inters do not incur any military service obligation by serving in the IDNG JAG Corps intern program.

Serve as an assistant, under the supervision of the Staff Judge Advocate, in the administration and coordination of legal activities for the state. Provides technical and procedural guidance and support to unit commanders and legal personnel as required in the accomplishment of a variety of assistance and clerical duties necessary for effective and efficient operation of the program.

Receives visitors/clients and telephone calls and screens those to determine which can be personally handled, referred to the Staff Judge Advocate (SJA), staff attorneys, or referral to another agency. Provides information on routine or procedural matters of the office. Interviews clients to obtain personal facts and specifics such as: names, number/age of dependents, dates, etc. in preparation of legal documents. Performs research for specific information, as requested by attorneys, on a variety of subjects. Must chose from references that may include, but are not limited to: Department of Defense (DoD), Departments of the Army and Air Force, and National Guard Bureau regulations; Uniformed Code of Military Justice (UCMJ); State Code; and local policies and directives. Determines resource materials to be used and compiles information gathered for use by attorneys in case preparation. Receives and reviews documentation of Summary Court Martial and verifies punishment/action taken is in accordance with established regulations and guidelines. Documents requiring correction or further justification/review are returned to subordinate office and/or brought to the attention of the SJA before final legal review.

Receives incoming correspondence, screens material, prior to distribution, to determine what matters may be personally handled (matters of a non-technical nature) and what matters need to be referred to the staff attorneys or to the supervisor. Reviews outgoing correspondence for proper format, conformance with general policy and procedural instructions, grammar, accuracy, and inclusion of necessary attachments. Returns to the originator any correspondence that requires correction and identifies the correction to be made.

Maintains an office calendar and schedules appointments for those clients who need the services of an attorney. Maintains a suspense file for those items that require action or replies and notifies staff members when action is required. Updates and maintains various publications, regulations, and policies used in the research process. Prepares and maintains case files to include storage and record retirement. Performs general clerical or assistance support functions which may include, but are not limited to: maintains time and attendance records; makes travel arrangements for staff members and forwards travel vouchers for reimbursement; maintains log, as required, of incoming and outgoing correspondence; and requisitions office supplies and office equipment repairs.

Initiates and composes routine, non-technical legal documents using standardized legal forms or templates, or composes legal documents based on direction provided by the staff attorneys or supervisor. Selects appropriate legal document based on legal action being requested. Utilizes computer databases to enter and retrieve data and to prepare special and recurring reports as required.

    GENERAL EXPERIENCE:
    Work that involves administrative support in connection with all court and legal proceedings instituted before the courts of justice.

    Minimum Requirements: Experience, education, or training that involved working with office automation systems, software practices and procedures. Experience in working with various legal assistant support functions.

    SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE:
    Must have at least 6 months experience, education or training in which demonstrates the ability to provide technical guidance and assistance in the type of work or in comparable work of the position to be filled. Experience interpreting regulations, policies or law and providing guidance.

    Education

    Substitution of Education for Specialized Experience - Completion of 2 academic years of education in an accredited college or university will satisfy the requirements for 3 months of specialized experience. Only education in excess of the first 60 semester hours (i.e., beyond the second year) is creditable toward meeting the specialized experience requirement. One full academic year of study (30 semester hours) beyond the second year is equivalent to 6 months of specialized experience.If you are using Education to qualify for this position, you must provide transcripts or other documentation to support your Educational claims.
