Duties

Summary

This position is located within a National Forest. The primary purpose of this position is to perform technical support to the heritage resources staff.


Responsibilities

  • Analyzes archeological data in preparing reports, for situations where precedents are not fully applicable. Makes recommendations to be used in "determinations of effect" and "determinations of eligibility" by the archaeologist.
  • Compiles and reports information about the nature and extent of known cultural resources. Adapts ground search strategies as determined by specific project requirements i.e., terrain, vegetation cover, and time frames.
  • Applies scientific methods to survey parcels of land to determine likely sites of archeological interest. Prepares Cultural Resource Inventory reports and site forms. Enters site and inventory information into databases and onto GIS maps.
  • Responsible for the preparation of archeological and historical information to create interpretive materials for display and dissemination. Monitors archeological projects to ensure sufficiency of fieldwork.
  • Conducts inventories of Forest cultural resources in areas of proposed Forest Service projects. Researchers reference materials such as State and National register files, historic documents, archeological reports, maps.
  • and aerial photos, and interviews source individuals concerning project areas. Insures that archeology work assignments are carried out in safe, timely manner according to established standards and procedures.
  • Reviews work in progress to see that standards for pre-field research, survey design, site recording, graphics, and final report are being met.
  • Advises other employees on methods of cultural resource inventory and provides written instructions, research materials and supplies to all involved in planning and operation of natural resource activities. Generally serves as a crew work leader.

    Qualifications

    GS-07: Applicants must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to GS-06 grade level.

    Successful completion of 1 year of graduate level education (18 semester/27 quarter hours), courses are History of archeology; archeology of a major geographical area such as North America or Africa; regional archeology, archeological cultures, or sites in a specific part or portion of a major geographical area; theory and methods of archeology; archeological field school. -OR

    A combination of education and experience listed above.

    Examples of specialized experience include: Monitoring archaeological projects to ensure sufficiency of on-site surveying and recording; Preparing reports, such as cultural resource inventories, that document project's environmental and cultural backgrounds, methodologies, and findings; Identifying and recording on maps or aerial photographs the exact locations and orientations of artifacts found.

    Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment.     PLEASE NOTE: This vacancy is being used to fill positions for FY2021 Temporary Employment Hiring season.

    This position is temporary, has a Not-to-Exceed date and will be filled for up to 6 months or as a not to exceed (NTE) 1 year, however an extension of the appointment may be possible without further competition. The appointment may also end early due to lack of work or lack of funds.

    The duty station for this position will be at one of the duty locations listed in this announcement. Salary range as shown is the locality pay Rest of U.S. (RUS). Pay rates vary by location. Please visit the Office of Personnel Management's website for additional information on pay rates.

    The USDA Forest Service has legislative authority to recruit and fill Permanent (Career/Career-Conditional), Temporary, and Term Appointments under the USDA Demonstration Project. Under this authority, any U.S. citizen may apply.

This evaluation is based on the level of your experience, education, and/or training as determined by your responses to the Assessment Questionnaire.
