Summary/Objective
The Animal Control officer enforces animal laws and codes for City, county, and state, or other
jurisdictions specified by city administration. This position patrols the City of Manhattan in an
Animal control vehicle and uses approved and professional methods to capture and transport
animals to the Animal shelter for processing. The Animal Control Officer also investigates
reports of animal violations as specified in Manhattan code of ordinances, assists with the daily
functioning of the Animal Shelter as needed and interacts with the public on a daily basis,
providing educational resources regarding animal regulations.
Essential Functions
- Safely apprehend, capture and transport domestic animals by manually lifting into Animal Control Vehicle.
- Patrol, write citations and notifications of complaint and respond to calls.
- Complete body condition scores for in-take and medical records through accurate identification of body type, breed, age and general condition of domestic animals.
- Inspect and license local facilities, such as kennels and pet stores.
- Performs related work within the Animal Shelter including handling and shelter operations which includes disinfecting crates and cages as needed, maintenance and upkeep of shelter, and performing animal in-take procedures and vaccination protocols.
- Participate in community outreach and education
Other Duties
- May have to testify in court regarding animal cruelty or neglect cases.
- Defuse situations involving potentially angry or abusive people.
- Write reports to maintain daily logs, and monthly and yearly statistics.
- Assist with animal behavioral assessments and enrichment at the animal shelter.
- Communicate and detailed information with co-workers on open cases.
- Assist with reclaims, surrenders, and adoptions both in person on by phone.
- Recognize the signs and symptoms of the rabies virus and know the policies and procedures to quarantine, complete rabies exposure reports and communicate with the local health department when necessary.
Required Education and Experience
- Graduate of High School or GED
- Valid Class C driver’s license
Preferred Education and Experience
- Animal Control / Animal Shelter or law enforcement experience
- Knowledge of local and state statutes, laws, and codes as they pertain to animals.
- Knowledge and understanding of Police Dispatch codes and standard police report writing format
- Knowledge of the City Code, City organizations and structure, City policies, rules, regulations, procedures and ability to apply these to work problems.
- Knowledge of the safety precautions, principles, and techniques used when working with potentially dangerous animals.
