Under general direction, the Environmental Program Technician is responsible for administering key environmental programs in the Utility Division specific to the potable water system for Backflow Prevention, the wastewater collection system for Fat, Oil and Grease (FOG) Programs, initiate water and wastewater work orders. Directly responsible to protect the potable water system, the wastewater collection system, and treatment plants through ensuring compliance with program implementation, local ordinance and State and Federal laws. The Environmental Program Technician is responsible for delivering high quality service to utility customers, and must prepare reports, initiate work orders, and assure all safety policies and procedures are adhered to.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Conduct backflow, customer service and oil and grease inspections including grease interceptors and maintain data base for each Program in accordance to State and Federal laws.
  • Respond to inquiries and complaints related to both Programs.
  • Review plans and drawings and provide information to the Environmental Programs Manager related to compliance requirements for installation of backflow prevention assemblies and grease interceptors.
  • Identify use sites where protection apparatuses are necessary; notify and advise customers of apparatuses required; follows-up to ensure that the appropriate apparatuses have been installed.
  • Maintain and deliver various reports to the Environmental Programs Manager as needed; and semi-annual update for each program to the Environmental Programs Manager and other key members of leadership in Utility Services including the Public Works Director.
  • Manage and participate in the annual budget process for each Program.
  • Assist in managing, planning, developing and delivering educational material for each program to the utility customers.


Minimum Qualifications

  • High School diploma or GED required. Some college preferred.
  • Experience in reading maps, blueprints and engineering plans preferred.
  • Experience working with backflow and FOG programs preferred.
  • Must obtain a TCEQ issued and Customer Service Inspection (CSI) license within 2.5 years.
